Zoom H1/ Cheap Recorder Question

Hello everyone- Probably an easy question for most of you...

On cheap recorders with built-in stereo mics (like the Zoom H1 or H2) can you record in mono? I want some field sounds (cheaply) in mono.

I'm assuming you can record mono through the mic line-in, but without XLRs, does a dynamic mic produce terrible results?

Thanks for your time.

What kinds of "field sounds," exactly, do you want in mono? You may be better off recording in stereo, depending on the sound, and if you really need it to be mono adjusting that in post.

If you would like a mono track from your Zoom, just record in stereo, then take the best track from either the left or right channel. You can also buy a mic splitter and record one mic to both tracks. There may be a setting in the menus for mono, I know my Fostex FR2LE has it. But I never use it.

The H2 does have a mono recording setting, so I'd imagine the H1 will. It records both mics in the stereo array into a monaural signal. But here's the challenge: when you record the stereo source image in mono, you may end up with phasing problems.

So, again, you're better off recording in stereo and creating your mono file in post where you have complete control. This may be by taking only one channel, or by mixing the two together. But at least you'll have the option.

Thanks for the replies.
I assume stereo works well for ambience, but for specific sounds it shouldn't be bouncing around left to right or vice-versa.

I didn't even think about just choosing one channel, duh. Phasing was a concern. Thanks.

So for a recorder with no XLRs a battery-powered mic like the NTG2 is a reasonable addition?
