damn your right for sure..zoom doom !

In most shooting the action dictates the focal length. The focal length is motivated by necessity. Incorporation supersedes artistic choice.

It is possible to shoot only with primes but in covering action where the action is not under the control of the camera, you ARE going to miss things and often miss things that would less likely have been missed were you on a zoom.

The "crash zoom" of Leone films is not, of course, the only type of zoom. There are zoom shots in famous films that are wonderful and are certainly "motivated". The slow zoom into an interview subject who is becoming emotional and / or telling a dramatic story is every bit as motivated as is any fixed focal length choice. It is artistic choice seeking to emphasize emotion and convey emotion on the part of the viewer.

Often when I perform zoom shots in my work it is because I am being instructed to perform a zoom shot. ( as was the case for me several times yesterday when doing live shots from the sideline of an NFL game ). "Standby New Orleans. We are coming to you in 30 seconds. Come out wider and give me a slow push when we come to you." I'm not going to respond "Sorry Bristol, but I do not feel that a zoom is motivated here." :Drogar-Happy(DBG):

Feature films rarely use zoom shots, but they typically have a zoom lens on the camera more often than they have a prime lens of the camera.

DEFEND the zoom! Down with Prime snobbery!!

Shipping January. Preorders up the wazzoo already so likely to be a wait :(

Interesting that he said they are a step up from the CP2s in terms of quality and basically like the Ultra Primes. Says to me that CP3s (based on Otus?) will be debuting at NAB 2017....

Nola, don't you ever let that Lucas guy behind the camera again!

It's not snobbery. People that use them are just cooler and more popular and have fresher breath.

Your preaching to the choir here sir.. read my posts.. Im the champion of the zoom.. I have one and its pretty much glued onto the camera.. I hardly ever use primes and totally agree and have argued the case for the need for a zoom in doc,s.. and corps.. to the annoyance of my fellow forum chums..

Zoom doom refers only to the totally un motivated "Tromboning" shots that in experienced directors sometimes request.. like the huge pull out instead of a cut.. sports shooting is of course a bit different .. I live by the zoom.. all power to it..!
