Other: ZEISS LWZ.3 21-100mm/T.2.9-3.9 T Announced

Not wide enough, not long enough…

It's big, heavy and expensive, but the Canon 17-120 is still the best 'all-in-one'/ENG/Doc s35 lens.

but has three times the price. The Zeiss does not look bad but for the limitation at the wide end it's too expensive to me.

Everything is a trade-off. I'd LOVE a 10x: 12-120 or 15-150. But it'd be heavy and expensive or to make it manageable and semi-affordable it'd be a lot slower than I'd want.

For me, for that type of lens, it HAS to be below 20mm to be really useable on the wide end. I think 17mm on the Canon is right on the line.

Interesting that it has interchangeable mounts. I wonder what the coverage of this lens is? Could be very interesting with a Speedbooster if it covers FF.

agreed.. seems the achilles heel of the "cheaper" cine zooms coming out.. even 17mm is on the edge as R & G says.. 21mm is really NG for doc,s .. except maybe Nat history.. but they need longer too.. but as the reviewer says, its probably better than using stills zooms.. the best lens remains the CN7.. and an easy rig !.. the two should get together and offer a package deal ..

Servo or no servo? The reviews I read don't say.

Frustratingly close to being "THE lens" that everyone wants. The speed is tolerable and better than the f/4 of the Canon 18-80mm. The price is right. But not the 21mm wide end.

A bit disheartening for there to be a new zoom offering from one of the big boys only for it to fall short of what we all want and need. It tells you that for all their work they still do not yet possess the know-how to produce what the market desperately wants- s35 servo zoom in the range of 16-120mm, constant T 2.8, minimal breathing, focus end stop, manual iris, 180 degree focus reach,
under 6 lbs, under 15 inches in length, priced under $16k. With back-focus adjustment and interchangeable mounts. Oh, and a cherry on top.

100% Agreed. Frustratingly close. PL Mount 21-100 and PL tokina 11-16 might work though. Could be interesting to only rely on wide when you want it to be super wide. I do really like this lens. It's first on my list of realistic lens purchases now. The 20-120 at 5 grand more doesn't seem quite as worth the 15k anymore, but perhaps it is. I need to have a shoot day with each of those lenses whenever that will be possible.

Tokina has a 11-20mm f2.8 stills lens, hopefully a PL version of that might come from Tokina eventually? Or someone else like GL Optics has done it already?

No servo.. but there is apparently some chance of a servo unit for this lens some where down the road..

I dont miss my EX1.. I shoot with it.

In fact here is a dirty secret.. it has been on EVERY JOB IVE EVER BEEN ON as a reserve camera.

And often my first shots in any film are done with it as I basically can be up and running in about 10 seconds of arrival.

There are some thing were it is just better to be able to get coverage of live action. Fook codec, fook bokeh, fook 4k.. just get it.

And that is what I dont get with all this fancy cinematography equipment

In the design house the question should be.. will our product be better than an EX1?

No? Back to the drawing board!

Well I guess you are one of those lucky to have a proper 2/3 camera..

Now that is something I would find very hard to replace say with this zoom and an FS7

If the zoom started at 17 and the FS7 had digital punch in for HD (one button) then it would give a 2/3 cam a run for its money :)
