Other: ZEISS LWZ.3 21-100mm/T.2.9-3.9 T Announced

Apparently it is inperceptable as it is a smooth ramp along the zoom range. I don't think it ramps if you are say, stopped down to f5.6

looks great - did they tell which camera the used for the messenger video? Looks great but I don't think it was the FS7 which had the lens in the booth.

Alexa mini I believe. For a doc shooter punching in quickly 1 stop will be very noticeble I think. But aslong as you can set it to t3.9 and dont have it ramp it will be no problems.

To me ramping can be a really big deal and a full stop is a lot. In low light its of course very bothersome. I would also think of this really as a 3.9 lens cause I don't want to feel I can only use my lens at the wide end. I'd be surprised if it doesn't get even till 5.6 though - that would be a deal breaker to me.

The consumer Sony 18-200 ramps considerably 3.5- 6.3 but once you get to 6.3 its even and that actually does leave it useable even indoors in a lot of situations if shooting custom at a reasonably high ISO. But that's a compromise I can accept in a small cheap lens with a huge zoom range. Not at $10 Grand though.

It's a bit less than a stop isn't it? And with the constant ramp (according to Zeiss) that's from the extremes of 21 to 100 so going from 35 to 85 won't be anywhere near as much.

My Contax Zeiss 28-85 f3.3-f4 is only slightly noticeable from one end to another.

I guess it all depends how the ramp works. Most of the B4 long zooms ramped but only right near the end so that wasn't a problem. Also that big question would be does it get even at 3.9 or only at 5.6.

I didn't realize how small it was before I saw it mounted on a FS7. Great size. Looking forward to this lens. Canceling my 18-85 Canon order. (Kind of just put my name down to be first in line in case it got good reviews)
I might find it harder to recoup the cost of I buy this as producers have gotten used to a certain price level on the FS7 package and it will be difficult to rise that now

Messenger video?

I only saw the Ursa 4k test footage and the 'Circle' film shot on FS7. Is there another one?

Interesting in the interview that he says everyone's zooms ramp but they don't admit it....

Yes my $26K Fujinon 4.5 ENG zoom, it was very noticeable at the long end.. and not mentioned in the fancy blurb leaflet ..!! my current zoom has it too.. you only see it if your wide open.. and it can easily be corrected.. its pretty rare that the actual zoom is going to be used anyway..
But I think I,d rather have it come in just at the end ..and keep constant T stop as far as I could,or at least know where it comes in and set a stopper there . than a gradual "dimming" along the whole zoom length.. just for the sake of being able to use the actual zoom..? if thats what they mean.. I wonder how they even do that..?

I hear what you're saying, but how often are you going to zoom from 21 - 100mm in one shot? And over the course of that zoom there's less than a stop difference. And of course if you're planning to do that just have the iris at T3.9

I agree it's not the ideal, but I wonder just how much it will be noticeable in the real world. Again, going from 35-85 would almost certainly be imperceptible.

Won't know any of this until I get my hands on it I guess.

Yes thats what I mean.. you are very rarely going to use the zoom in picture .. but you often need to bang in really tight sometimes.. and then that tight shot can be corrected in post very easily .. thats why I question the gradual ramp over the whole range.. the only use for this would be if you actually wanted to use the zoom in picture without the end bit suddenly going dark.. I,d rather have max constant aperture as far as I can go.. and have steeper fall off right at the end..

I guess then you have to treat it like a T3.9 lens to keep it even.

Yes but then you dont need the gradual ramp.. just ramp at the end would do the same.. its only going to ramp when set to wide open.. I,d rather have as much of the max aperture as possible in focal length range.. and just deal with the ramp right at the end.. or set to 3.9 if I was told the actual zoom will be used.. or its a justified zoom out to something.. or a director mad on 70,s movies.. trying to get me sacked..
