zak forsman d90 workflow

John, the only joke is how much a troll your becoming. There are many reasons a person might choose a D90/400 over the Scarlet Fixed, they are two complete different cameras. The question is very valid. The only problem with the question is that neither company has released official specs and prices for the cameras, so it is a bit unanswerable at this moment.

@Zak, great read, thanks for sharing!

Aha... My thoughts exactly. You took the words out of my mind. Good thinking on your part.

Its not as ridiculous a question as it might sound. The 5D is being intercut with the red and some report it is fairly seamless even though its 30p. If Nikon up the game with a 1080p which has a BIGGER sensor lets not forget than a scarlet then it could be serious competition. And I find when i look at videos on Vimeo I often find RED footage a bit too crisp and video looking while SOME D90 looks like soft 16mm film. I'm sure a higher end RED would be much better than a DSLR but the lower end Scarlets comparable in price to the new DSLSR's coming out should be compared if anything due to price. So don't forget we have not seen properly yet what a DSLR full frame 24p, with tamed jello looks like, I think it will do pretty well against the scarlet as least on terms of the look, whether the controls are helpful for a profession is yet to be seen.

Oh and John a forum is a place where people discuss ask questions they don't know, share knowledge, thoughts etc its not to showcase how much you think you know. I was asking a 'theortical question' about how a improved DSLR would compare in the mind of a filmaker in comparison to the Scarlet, a valid discussion point.

Oh one last thing..... your a nob.

Excuse me if I misunderstood what you thought was a 'joke'.

Its OK. Things are getting exciting for all of us. Lots of choices coming our way. I was reading the GH1 Panasonic web page yesterday and at least on paper it sounds very cool.

The only thing I know for sure is that I don't know much.

John Caballero, I cannot believe that you still troll the D90 thread. It's been months right?

You are a crafty troll who always manages to divert my attention from learning how to be a better filmmaker into getting agitated and defensive. You are the anti-Robert Rodriguez.

lol

release the damn camera already! Specs are meaningless until you have real world application. Lets go nikon! Bring us the camera we all want and need!

This thread was about Zak's D90 workflow tips and was flowing nicely. Then somebody inferred that they were going a little off topic and BOOM!, John Caballero arrives and the thread becomes negative and personal.

I know I shouldn't bite, but it is so irritating.

For God's sake don't be so sensitive! Geeez. There is absolutely nothing personal unless you make it. I am here to talk about what I like and don't like, what I know and don't know. I don't ever criticize or bath mouth anybody or anybody's work in particular, AT ALL. It is all about the technology and my experience with it. We are suppose to be grown men and women, so step up to the task. I am always going to speak up my mind, especially on the technology that is clearly inferior, like the movie mode on my beloved D90 or anything that I FEEL people might be wasting their money on at the end of the day.

it's an AIS. and yes, "Mo/Pho" was shot 100% with that lens.

Wow the whole thing with a 28mm? Nice! I have been using a 35mm and really like it. I use the 5D now but I really want 24p so I might be getting the D90 soon. And thanks for your workflow post...that will help things flow much better for many I am sure.

A 28mm lens is crucial for handheld work with the D90. There's no other option really...

really? i use a 24 and it works fine. :-) seriously though if you have shoulder support a 50mm works fine too, even an 85 but that's pushing it. we shot most of my feature on the 24 and 50, with the 85 for some wide shots where we wanted to compress the background into the shot. 90% handheld, or shoulder held with spring loaded waist support i guess you'd call it.

Give me til tomorrow, I'll flip this whole long-end thing on its head. Shooting some scenes with the D90 and got a whole new workflow to share. Then it's off to the sales rack for a replacement. Muahaha.

The D90 rocks harder than I thought, but alas... it's time to move on to the next gen.

I've figured out a few things with the D90 though that might make things easier for those who want to keep it.

I had some test footage on my SD card and forgot that the PS3 could play that, AVC-HD and just about anything back so I plugged it in and was really VERY impressed with the footage quality on a large HD Panel of lower quality. The Samsung 42" LCD was even better. And this was all stuff that hadn't been corrected with the plugins and noise etc.

Anyway, new workflow etc comin' real soon with actual footage to show!
