Zacuto VS Redrock Follow Focus

Cinevate Durus works well for me. Grabs onto just one rail, but very solid and easy on-off.

I would second the recommend of the Cinevate Durus this is a fantastic FF.

We've had the Redrock v1 & v2 that both got poor to outright bad reviews from AC's and focus pullers we hire (these are guys who are used to working on big budget jobs with ARRI gear) but they love the Durus for it's solid feel, smooth movement, and zero(!!) lash in the gearbox.

heavyG you should look at the ff blue - we are working with ACs on sets of network tv shows right now and just about to start an ASC project with the ff | blue and all these guys are comparing to arri and really liking the Redrock. It's definitely a huge step into the professional realm, and still affordable.

While you here Brian, what happened to your iPhone remote FF? It looked really promising.

Could be a great FF - But the last two were less than stellar, and I'm not sure I want to buy another one to find out if you've made improvements.

FYI, the z-finder is a rebranded petroff. Not that it matters...

@Frank - it's alive and well and will be our next product release, just complicated. We have a facebook page with the latest details www.facebook.com/microRemote

@heavyG - you can check out the reviews, or stop by Vistek and see one in person.

I've got one on order and can't wait to get it in my hands. Looks like a really, really nice upgrade over the v2.

Just got the new RedRock Blue follow focus. It is wonderful, much nicer the the RedRock V2 I use now.

The new gearbox is much smaller. The unit can get very close to the AF100. With the V2 I had to reverse the gearbox to use it with the Voigtlander 25mm. With the Blue it fits with room to spare without reversing. Worth price just for that!

The hard stops are terrific, the adjustable pointer is much better than the V2 and the whip socket is tighter. It has the same great rod clamp that the V2 had, no need to slide anything off of the rails to remove the focus.

I picked up the double sided version. Both sides are complete with hard stops and whip socket - fully functional from either side. The wheels are connected with a stainless rod - same great feel on either side.

Highly recommended!

Steve

Its got the ability to have 2 wheels like a FF4

Is this in regard to my question? There are probably half a dozen double sided follow focus units currently available on the market, and have been available for what, nearly 30 years?

I don't think this is what was meant by "The only follow focus that allows you to add a second wheel on the opposite side which speeds up repositioning." It must be something else right? What am I missing Brian?

@Illya - ah something must have been truncated, we'll have to update. What it was supposed to say was it's the only follow focus we're aware of in our price range that allows you to add and remove the second side. Yes the FF4 and other high-end follow focuses allow you to do that, but you pay dearly for those.

Cheers

Brian

Just got my Redrock FF|Blue today, and I am impressed. I'll be road-testing it on a shoot next week, and I'll post my thoughts in a separate thread. But so far, props to Brian and his crew.

With the Redrock Micro microFollowFocus| Blue, will there be an option to add the second focus wheel after purchasing the single-sided one? I don't see any way to purchase the second side as an add-on, on the redrock micro website or B&H.

Anyone know how to reverse the gearbox on the Redrock FF Blue? Just got mine, and I need to reverse it for my Nikons.

I know it's a feature - but there's nothing about it in the included instructions, nor on the RR website.

Four screws under the gearbox will release it. Haven't tried it on mine yet, but that was what I was told by RR.

@Steve R - StephenM is correct - if you flip over the follow focus you'll see four recessed holes - there are 4 screws in there that you loosen, lift the gearbox up,rotate 180 degrees, and set back down. then tighten the screws. You should also double-check backlash and adjust if necessary ( I just did this on a set and backlash did not need any adjustment after flipping, so don't feel it's required).

We have a second instruction sheet in the works that covers this and how to add/remove second side. Check start.redrockmicro.com for all customer support-related updates. This sheet should be up in the next week or so.

@Andrew - yes we'll have that up shortly. You can purchase the second side as an add-on option. The price is the difference between the single and double sided.

ALERT - need to correct the information implied in my post above:

Contrary to what Redrock told me pre-purchase, the Redrock Micro Follow Focus Blue does NOT change direction of rotation when you flip the gearbox (...which, had it worked like ARRI and others, would have made Nikon lenses turn in the direction an experienced 1st AC would expect).

When you flip the gearbox, it functions exactly the same. The only advantage is for proximity issues - but not for reversal of travel.

I'm not happy, as this feature was really important to me (as you can see by my signature). Too bad, because otherwise it is a really nice piece.
