Zacuto Shootout Episode 2

GH2 is cheaper and takes better video. Not as good of pictures tho.

We used both the Canon and a GH13 & GH2 alongside REDMX and ALEXA in two productions for special shots and clearly the Panas did better video wise.

But... if you prefer a certain look, certain esthetics and want to use Canon-glass and else... you may go for Canon.

But does it really make sense to open another cam A vs. cam B discussion? I'd like to see more "camera A plus camera B" discussions.... ;-)

For me the test was important to give me a bit of a "technical base" for my impression that the AG-AF is for now a camera I want to own whereas the others, including F3 with S-Log, play in the "cameras to rent" class. But that's just me. And that even the other cameras like the Weiss-cam can produce good material in certain areas.

Interesting video.

Who was the AF100 "camera master"? It would be good to know the settings they used in each of the tests.

Just wondering after watching it, if anything useful can be derived if you use only Canon DSLR's at the moment...other than saving for an Alexa:) Was disappointed by sharpness and moire...has anyone done extensive tests with different sharpening algorithms-techniques with the 5D-7D-1D?

+1

Barry Russo, of Panasonic.

..and I would be surprised if he used anything other than a DEFAULT setting... but also keen to know if otherwise.

Maybe Barry knows him enough to ask.

As soon as you divert from Default...you open a whole world of test validation and get a skewed evaluation. Every test and every camera would have to have a "qualification of setting" added to it. That would be pointless.

The AF100 is great at Default and the all test setups were perfect for that.

BTW - I dont think I ever picked up on any discussion or comment in the 2 tests about "what" ISO settings were used. Wonder if it was standardised across all the cameras. Maybe I missed it amongst the amount of info.

I thought the tests and the procedures were ideal. We (me and my camera guys) learnt a lot and benefitted from them.

Hi,

Barry used a default setting, thinking that would be the easiest thing for people to reference in their own minds, and so that every thing the issue gets this question he wouldn't have to file a list of settings. He used Cine-Like D with the Default settings for Detail and Coring. He has wished since he has seen this test that he would have nudged those a little.

Best,

Jan

All tests were done at ISO 800 with tungsten lighting.

The af100 looked great... VERY impressed by it, even compared to the Alexa, Red and F3! I didn't think the 5D and 7D looked bad either. Sure, they were softer, but as long as you don't cut back and forth between a really sharp camera and a Canon, I don't think it would be a problem. I thought the 1Dmk4 was disappointing though.

pretty informative material, well executed. I bet if you had shown these clips to non industry related audience- and asked them to pick out the most cleanest, sharpest, well exposed image, and didn't tell them which cam is which- you would get a lot of shoulder shruggs...
Watch ep 3 and potentially ep. 4, I think we are going to do this

that would be a great, we all get a little lost in the pixel peeping and specs now and again. Watching joe and jane sixpack's reaction may remind us who film is made for: an audience, and not always a gathering of DPs, DITs, and image freaks. Most film-goers don't walk out of a threater saying "story shmory- did you see how well the highlights rolled off?!!"
