Zacuto Camera Shootout 2018 : Panasonic EVA1 vs Canon C200

I admire these efforts. He is a glutton for punishment. Heaven help him if Deakins declares one better than the other in a blind test.

I haven't seen one of these before. Are they true, objective head-to-head tests? I'll carve out some time to watch if so. Credit to both companies for agreeing to appear.

The last effort made for a pathetic showing by the community, including leaders of the community to jump on him. Everyone was so pleased with his shootout of several cameras before the cameras were identified. After the cameras were identified, people turned into animals. It was shameful.

The first shootouts were fascinating. One of them was pitching film against large sensor cameras. The next year they did a scene test with everything from an iphone to an Alexa. For the most part, the tests were just showing that it wasn't the tool that mattered. On some level, it settled both the film vs digital debate as well as the which camera is better debate. At least it made the debates seem relatively pointless. I am guessing that Zacuto has stopped selling as many DSLR rigs as they used so they want to start selling more midrange camcorder components.

I've watched several of the past Zacuto shootouts and overall I would say that Zacuto goes the extra mile to try and keep these shootouts fair.

I'm expecting both cameras will do really well in this shootout, with each one having it's own share of unique advantages, and it's fun to go through the published footage to make up your own mind about which one you prefer.

I'm sure it's just me, but I'm not super excited by a head to head of these two particular cameras, and I'd be much more interested in other comparisons of different cameras... but I guess that's always the case no matter which they pick, someone is always gonna go "but why X & Y, I'd much rather they did W & Z". Good for them, in cany case. Kudos!

I'm looking between these models to equip a new studio in the next few months so the timming is perfect for me. I will state before the test I am already leaning towards the EVA1.

"we'll need plenty of zacuto accessories to unleash each camera's potential"

Ha! Just a bit O' product placement..

I loved the first shootout because it showed each camera's breaking point. I hope they match exposure using a waveform instead of matching camera settings. In their first shootout they matched camera settings, which led to slightly different exposures between cameras.

That's what happens when people inexplicably wrap up their self-worth, esteem and identity in a product that they bought. Strangest psychological phenomenon I have ever experienced and it baffles me. I really should make a documentary about it. I've seen it with cars, motorcycles, computers but also especially with video and photographic gear. It's just plain weird and I see it far more with men than with women. I own the C200. If the shootout finds the EVA 1 produces a superior image, I will find it nothing more than interesting, it won't change my mind that the camera I bought was the right choice for my needs at the time and I've always said that if I could afford it, I would love to own both. But for cripes sake, it's just a stupid tool that I bought, it's not ME. Why do guys get all freaky about this stuff?

The choice makes perfect sense to me, the two newest, best-selling and most popular professional digital cinema cameras between $6k and $8k. The new sweet spot for pros who don't want to drop more than $10k on technology that's typically outdated in a matter of months. Cameras above $10k probably sell, overall, vastly fewer units to pros, than cameras in this price range. I wish we could see industry sales figures of these two, versus cameras like Varicams, F55s, REDs and higher. I did see numbers once (which are already outdated, I am sure) when the Arri Alexa Mini had been on the market for a while and you'd be amazed at how few of these type cameras Arri actually sells. When you look at R&D, engineering and manufacturing costs, especially to the quality level Arri produces at, it's kind of amazing that the products even exist and can be sold so cheaply, even though $40k isn't cheap. The economies of scale must be so weak for cameras above $40k.

I think it's worse in film because so many people are convinced that cameras = talent. I got rather annoyed with one potential client when he asked me to tell him what kind of camera I had, in order to show that I knew what I was doing (his words). As if the imagery in my portfolio didn't show that... Shooting on a Red won't get my prints into the Louvre... that was with a "lowly" Sony Nex-7.

I'd have gone with the EVA 1, because I'm partial to Panasonic's colors... but I wouldn't be bummed about shooting with a C200, either. I quite like what I've seen from it so far.

They're actually asking some tough questions here! Unfortunately the FB live video feed quality kind of destroys a lot of the detail. Hopefully gets reuploaded to Vimeo after.

I would guess it's a guy thing based upon tribalism. Men must defend the tribe/family and choice of weapon is an important part of that. My club is bigger and better than your club. If my club is shown to be a lesser club by someone, they must be wrong and they must be put down.

Why does it have to be a gender thing? Unless you're spending a lot of time in female-focused communities and can confirm otherwise, I'm guessing it probably happens there too, just arguing about different things.

I think it's more that all humans want the satisfaction of feeling special / like they're the best / like they belong. For most, their only shot at that is through buying things, because they lack the talent or ability or discipline to get there otherwise. So they attach a lot of importance to the tools, because they function as the sole connection to legitimacy. If you can't shoot the next great film, and you can't even buy the right camera, who are you? Nothing. No one wants to admit that, so they fight.
