This has been discussed a lot down in the hardware forum, I believe. So you may want to venture down there and search under "Travel" and "airline."

Most will tell you to never check it because if you go to Alaska and the camera goes to Fiji, you're screwed! So most people find a way to carry it on, often by downsizing the case to something airline legal like a back pack. The other downside to checking it as stowed baggage is mishandling.

There's option 3 which I might try next time I fly: ship it ahead of yourself by FedEx or whatever carrier you have access to. This way you keep your rugged case and it shows up when/where you need it. I, for one, was hesitant to do this until the folks at one of the sponsors here told me they ship $100,000s of gear everyday and it neither gets lost or damaged and it turns up on time. They are completley comfortable with the process, so there's no reason I shouldn't be....

Finally: insure it. If you're a pro, get business insurance to cover the gear. If not, put it on your homeowner's or renter's insurance, many of which provide world-wide coverage for loss or damage.

Cheers,

I flew to Canada and Jamaica from the UK with my EX1 and i carried it on as hand luggage using a camera bag i bought from 'petrol' which is perfect for the cam, battery, external mic, charger etc I would never check it in with my suitcases, trust me it wont come back the in the condition it left you, but honestly i think it would be worth shelling out £99 for a smaller bag like mine or if you have a padded bag already just use that

The bag im refering to is http://www.creativevideo.co.uk/public/view_item_cat.php?catalogue_number=petrol_pccb-2-n

they sell cheaper ones which id assume would fit the cam snugly also as my particular bag still has loads of room, infact i keep my laptop and charger in there at the same time also, even abroad. Enjoy your trip

I have a Kato 195 or 197? for my EX1.
Works well when i fly and fits easily into overhead storage areas of jet airliners.
Also has lots of room to put extra batteries, charger, and additional mics, cables etc.
Laptop has to go seperately (15.4"MBP late 2008 unibody) and it fits overhead too.
