My Wish List For Panasonic

I'll chime in on the 6 or 8 pin firewircable with a better placement (the back, I guess) and a solid foundation.

The firewire port seems to be ridicoulousilly bad on several Panny products. Both physical design and how they treat connection/disconnection/blow. Which is a real pain as the solutions depend heavilly on those very ports.

I have used the same PD-150 since 2002, never thought of the firewire port as a potential problem.

One week with the HVX and I saw easilliy that it's gonna break one day. Even more so now with the firestore. And reading about people who break their equipment (DVX/HVX/AJ1200) when they disconnect/connect FW really gives me the chill.

The LCD is also a real bummer. Focus assist is a good idea, but only if we can get 1 to 1 pixel and move the point of focus around the screen at will. Who wants to focus dead center at all times?

And even with the BT-1700 LH, you don't get 1 to one focus.

I hate these silly, silly, silly things about an otherwise lovely camera (About to buy one more...)

Never used a Z-1

PLEASE can we have ND in 1 stop increments . . ?
It's so difficult to maintain a constant aperture (iris) setting when the ND is so coarse.
That's not likely practical. The ND filter is a physical filter system; to have one-stop increments it'd obviously have to take up 3x as much space as it currently does; I don't know that there's enough room in the cam to do that.

I'd LOVE it if it were possible, but I'm pointing out that it's not some sort of electronic ND, it's actually a physical wheel.

Someone makes a variable-ND filter which can be adjusted from like 1 stop to 8 stops, but IINM it's actually two polarizing filters; as you rotate one against the other it varies the amount of light transmission. Which is all fine and dandy, but polarizers change the look of the footage depending on which way you're pointing the camera relative to the sun so I don't know that I'd trust something like that for outdoors use. But if you want to, it's there...

The connection issue has nothing to do with Panasonic, there are reports of blown firewire ports on Sony, Canon, and JVC cams too. The root of the evil appears to be six-pin to 4-pin issues.

As far as firewire goes, a six-pin connector that faces vertically down, like on the Z1 and FX1, would be ideal. Especially if it was enhanced with some manner of locking connector.

And even with the BT-1700 LH, you don't get 1 to one focus.
True, but they're adding it to the newer monitors. The 26" and the new 8" both do it. I've been asking for 1:1 since the HVX was first rumored; now they've demonstrated the capability so I'm hoping it'll be included on any future revisions.

1) would be great if the clip had the f-stop, focus, zoom, color temperature, etc stored in the data file. shouldnt be too dificult as many digital picture cameras record and save. its miniscule amount of data. (think, never have to hold up a chart again when doing tests, and looking back at)

2)should be a button that places a marker on your clip. when you bring your clip into FCP or whatever NLE it would show up on the clip/sequence. how great would this be for directors to communicate with editors. this button should also be on the remote so when im not operating the camera, i could still place markers.

1) Yes it's a miniscule amount of data, but you'd have to update it for every frame because focus, f-stop, zoom, even color temperature can all be changed in the middle of a shot.

2) already exists, but FCP doesn't use it. On a PC editor like EDIUS you see the shot mark; EDIUS uses all the metadata. In fact you can use the text memo function to place up to 100 markers within a clip, so you could mark a segment and leave a note to the editor that says "don't use this portion here, someone walked through the shot and we don't have a release on them" or something like that. That exists right now today, but again FCP doesn't take advantage of it.

Hey barry, does #2 work with the firestore fs100 or just with the p2 cards. sorry i'm at work and can't check the manual

1) would still be an amazing option. not saying its easy but technically it could just record info like timecode and regardless what the numbers/letters say, it reads it.

2) maybe i should redirect my thoughts to steve jobs.

not likely. a firmware update wont do things liek htat.

A firmware up date really wont do much. alot of people have high expectations for it. basically i think all it can do is like, possibly unlock a coule of more framerates maybe... I doubt it more than that.

Why wouldn't you just turn off the auto focus and use manually?

Best,

Jan

Haven't looked at this thread in a bit. I never use auto focus. I am speaking of manual. You really just need to graze the focus ring and it moves. If you use manual zoom there are many opportunities to lose focus. Those who use an adapter have issues with accidentally hitting the focus ring.

man, just when I walk away Jan comes in and listens to your suggestions? :( lol

Jan & Barry,
Is there a way to find out if Pana will change/add something to the HVX this NAB? When will the 200a come out? Can we get a glimpse as to what is being considered/developed? or is all of this top secret still?

gaff tape. miracle cure.

If you are on a set, sure. circumstances when you are not rushing and have a steady hand you can apply tape. I was shooting some handheld the other day at a park with the camera on a spiderbrace. About 1 in 5, I hit the focus when adjusting the zoom. I wasn't going to use tape in this circumstance.
Having a button to lock it would be nice to have given the sensitivity and the need for sharp focus in HD.

moot point for me bc it wouldn't be a firmware update and I am not going to buy another HVX. I love the camera though, I'm not being negative just constructive. For what you get for the price, no regrets.

Only Jan could answer this, and I can pretty much guarantee that she won't. Companies rarely if ever talk about upcoming changes to existing models. The only reason we found out about the DVX100B prior to release is because of the RoHS initiative; Panasonic couldn't manufacture the 100A anymore because of the lead content, so they said a new one that was RoHS-compliant would be coming. But even so, they didn't breathe a word of what the new features would be.

you guys think the new HVX will have a Gaff tape dispenser on it?

That'd rock! It'd solve the problem with all the little FW disconnects I get from that 4-pin port while I'm shooting run-n-gun! Dude, that'd be great!

I know, I'm an idiot...

Personally, I doubt there will be a HVX 200a-b-c etc.

At the rate new cameras are coming out, it'll just be a new camera instead of new version of an older model.
Just my opinion, but still hoping for those couple tricks like delete last clip.
