C100: Z-Finder Pro for C100

At last! Though I'm wondering about the Z-Bands, they were a pain in the bum on the original Z-Finder. On the C100 though it looks too movable if they aren't in pace.

hahaha, I do not believe it works. Z-band is a joke

bet you cant put your eyes on it when the screen is tilt, any small amount of force will push the screen toward the camera body

I don't really think thats a big issue. What I do right now with my hoodman lcd loupe is just stick a small piece of auralux foam that I cut from extra auralux isolation monitor pads I had lying around and I just wedge that in there to keep the lcd at the angle I want. Actually works really well

I don't think the Z-Bands are going to hold the viewfinder in place if you're going to try to use it at an angle. We shall see.

What mount are you referring too? This is not just a regular zfinder for a DSLR. It is a new 1.8X model that is designed for the widescreen of the C100. I don't think any of the previous models would even work right.....so the mount by itself would probably be useless.

Awesome Erik! I've been wanting to order one since first hearing about them 6 months ago but now that the Z-Bands are in play I'll hold off until someone does a 3rd party review of it.

I took my 7D with Z-Finder and Z-bands to Japan a couple of years ago and they were such a PITA that I ended up removing them, though I'm not sure if the 7D form was really any good for the Z-Bands.

Hey Erik,

Did you receive your Z-Finder for the c100 yet? I greatly respect your opinion and would love to hear your thoughts when you get the chance!

Thanks so much!
Rob

I think some third party supplier like Canon should come up with a solution to the crap evf and lcd problem on the C100 and Call it the C150. That should sort it nicely.

Mine will be here June 10th. Monday. Was hoping it would show up Saturday but oh well. This is going to a hectic week for me but I will do my best to test it out. I have a shoot tomorrow night so if it gets here in the morning then I'm set.

Erik,

Sounds great. Your review of the c100 was a big factor in deciding to go with the c100. Thanks so much, and I love using this camera everyday!

I had to pick up my son from school and the C100 Z-Finder was at the door. I did a super quick test and I like it. The main concern for me was the Z-Bands and yes they wont hold the LCD with Z-Finder in place if you're pressing your face up against it when with the LCD is half way between flat against the body and up position. It's usable if you lightly press your face on it. I dont think it's necessary to be in that position anyway.
The good news is the bands hold well when the Z-finder is tilted all the way up. Great for low angle shots. This will work very well.
It's not perfect but the design of the LCD isnt either. Got to run back to work for a shoot. Hope this helps. I'll try to shoot a little demo of it this week.

Thanks Erik. That does help. I just really need something to help on really sunny days. Not a big fan of the built in viewfinder. :) Looking forward to a demo video if you get the chance to make one. Thanks again!

One thing really annoying is not being able to magnify the EVF, when the LCD is open. But it has to be open, since Waveform won't be displayed in the EVF... So especially on bright sunny days, where you would need both a light blocking EVF and a waveform, your left with opening and closing the LCD back and forth.
So I´m really looking forward to the first reviews of the Zacuto C-loupe, my main concern would be ergonomics:
With a simple third party rubber eyepiece, the C100's EVF is perfect for tugging in your elbows and distributing the weight of the camera back on your body, while your head and the camera also can "bond" firmly.
The loupe creates distance to the body, the cameras center of gravity moves in front of your body and you have to slightly lift the C100, because of the lower position of the LCD and because the Zbands won't hold the LCD with loupe at an angle.
But hopefully I´m thinking wrong here and it still balances nicely.
