Z finder or field monitor???

Looks bulky to me, adding too much weight with no attempts to reduce weight.
I want something as light as possible, as it all adds up.

I'm going to assume then that you haven't held one before. I played with it in the store today and it is amazing. Well built, and very light weight.

I just received the Varavon viewfinder that is very well built for 300.00 and offers 2 distinct advantages to the z-finder. angle viewing (from above) and a complete shade when viewfinder is removed. 3 times magnification in viewfinder mode just like z-finder and has a very elegant mount that is mounted and removed simply and quickly. I really, really love it. www.varavon.com

Whatever works for you guys but from my experience the focus with the finder was shaky at beast, while with a monitor it was always spot on.

The Varavon viewfinder looks pretty cool. But the price is too steep for me.

I'm using a Liliput on-board, and will get a SmallHD when it ships next month. I own a Hoodman viewfinder, and almost never put it on. Maybe it's my style of shooting, but it is very rare that I am holding my camera at eye level. At least not for narative work, even when going handheld, i've usually got the camera at chest height.

I just find an LCD monitor far more versatile and useful...even the liliput which I own and which has a very poor image compared to higher priced models (and I hope compared to the new Small HD).

It depends,
I find that a monitor is good when I am doing commercial work and the client needs to look at something. Also generally it would be more for situation on sticks. The z-finder is when I am looking more for an EVF type of situation, generally more docu-pickups style work. This is often also closer to my own personal work.

Therefore, for me, it really depends on what one's needs are based on this criteria above.
