ANVIL - there is simply no better doc to see if you have ever been in a band.
Driver 23 - similar to Anvil - instant classic - the follow up is called The Atlas Moth and is equally disturbing.
Dogtown and Z Boys - so cool, so cool.
American Movie - my god, what a film
King Of Kong - so so good. Damn you Billy Mitchell!
Who killed the Electric car - just goes to show all our lives are controlled by energy companies.
This thread makes me realize how much better documentaries can be than actual big budget hollywood trash.

Perhaps too late for the OP (2007 was a while ago). Still... Three favorites come to mind right off the top of my head.
First, Helvetica. Who would have thought that a documentary about a type face could be so interesting? Amazing how many people it effects and how far reaching it is, still. Really well done IMHO.
Second, Independent Lens: Between the Folds, which is a fascinating look at the world of modern origami. No I'm not kidding, and it's just brilliant.
Third, Exit Through the Gift Shop. I don't know whether this is a documentary, a meta-documentary, or a hoax. But it's really well done and will keep most people engrossed end to end. Another one that's brilliant.
