Young Filmmaker Needs Help

I recently got a DVX100a and am looking to invest in a shotgun mic for it. I'm not looking for anything outrageously expensive or nice (I don't need TV quality sound) but would like something that will give me some pretty good audio, at least compared to the stock mic. My budget is kind of small between 90-150 and I was wondering if any of you seasoned pros had any suggestions.

Also I saw some good prices for batteries and cases at Adorama and was wondering if they were reputable

You might want to check out B&H Photo on the web. They have a good selection in a variety of prices.

if you search on this forum, the ntg1 & ntg2 comes up pretty often so I got the ntg2 and I've been happy with it.

Always a great place to start when checking the reputability of an online retailer.

The NTG-1 or NTG-2 would be your best bet. They are essentially the same mic, except that the 1 is phantom-only while the 2 can be powered by external phantom or internal AA battery.

You won't really find much under $150 that will give you decent results. I know you say you "don't need TV quality sound," but neglecting your audio can kill your project... and quickly. Don't write it off. Audio isn't an afterthought, so get the best you can now.

A decent mic will probably fall between 150 and 250 for your budget. If you are planning on getting more equipment right now, pretty much everything else you can cheap out on, even audio accessories but for a starting-out filmmaker, a good mic is essential. I use the Audio Technica AT897 which gives me awesome results! It costed me about 270 but it might be cheaper other places. Another place to look is ebay. Even though it's used (for the most part), you can get some sweet deals. I have never used the Rode NT series, but on my old camera, I had the Rode VideoMic and it was pretty good for $100... My favorite brand is definitely Audio Technica though.

I use the Azden sgm1x. It's not the best mic in the world, but for $180 it's a pretty good XLR mic. I didn't even realize the NTG was so cheap, as the cheapest I saw it was almost $200 as well.
