FS7: You can take 3 lenses and your FS7 which ones you grab?

There you are in front of your huge lens cabinet, full of nice primes, zooms, fast lenses, adapters, old lenses cheap lenses etc. Which three lenses you choose before jumping in the waiting taxi? And (knowing you will be paid very well) which lens would you buy at the duty free shop at the airport while waiting for your flight into fame and adventure?

For:
A- news, run and gun and interview
B- warzone, riots, dusty factory, boat or other unhealthy places
C- nice warm and dry studio
D- nature/sport

A: News

I'll only take the 10-250 mm T1.4 Tokicaniko

Of my own lenses

21mm f2.8 OR 35mm f1.4 (depending on the job), 85mm f1.4 and 28-85mm modded Contax Zeiss could see me through just about everything.

What would I like to buy? If it's not my money a set of Master Primes, Cooke S5s or Cooke Anamorphics.

If it is my money I'm pretty set with a full set of Contax primes now.

For news gathering, no lens change work it'd have to be something like the 19-90mm Fuji Cabrio or the Canon 17-120mm, or some S-16mm superzooms. For everything else, I think I'd go the three Zeiss Compact Zooms 15-30mm, 28-80mm and 70-200mm, with both a Speedbooster and a regular mount for them.

News, PXW X200
War, PXW X70
Studio, FS7 and your choice of hooray lenses. I'd hack with an 16-70 F4.
Nature/Sport PXW X320

I don't think the FS7 is ideally suited to all tasks and you have much better choices in other areas of Sony's range, you'd be flat out stupid to rock up in a war zone with one. I couldn't think of a worse camera than the FS7 for the Royal Courts of Justice camera scrum where the X200 would serve well as camera and weapon (especially mounted on a monopod.)

I commend you on asking a question that is reasonable. Many tools have their appropriate uses while be completely innapropriate in other situations.

news rng - 28-85 and booster, 50-300, 50 1.8

interview 24_booster 35-70 50 1.8

warzone 28-85 and booster, 50-300, 50 1.8

My work horses are..
10-24 tonka
28-85 nikkor
50 1.8 nikkor
50-300 nikkor

really that is 4 and it will cover most stuff

I guess the next ones I add are my 28/2 and 85/2 or 135/2.8

Sam,

IIRC correctly you had/have the 100-300 AIS, how does it compared optically to the 50-300? I know the latter is faster but is it a much better lens?

Can the FS7 take the 50-300 unsupported? The mount and body do feel much more substantial but it's a lot of glass and moment.

Similarly I was looking at the Consina 100-500 which can be picked up old stock new for £99 and might be a good choice for sunny water sports. I might take a punt on this as I've always wanted to get a close up of the horse head nebula.

The 100-300 5.6 is a hoot - I think it cost me about 50 quid - cant see much wrong with it myself, thanks for reminding me I have it.. my 50-300 is a bit of a beast to carry and the 5.6 version will get new life with a speed booster.

Unlike any modern lens the 100-300 is a joy to focus.

My 50-300 has a support that I made, it is a neat design if I say so my self. Using an overlength fotto plate and a custom widget, this works without rods if needed, has enough fore aft to work with a booster or reg adapter goes on with no tools and does not foul any other lenses. I should have an engineering degree.

I would suggest support.

My lenses, would be the Nikon 17-35mm f2.8 (awesome wide-angle zoom), my Zeiss ZF.2 50mm f2 and Zeiss ZF.2 100mm (just love the images from these).

If I could choose, probably the Fuji Cabrio 19-90, that would be very nice.

That's a really elegant solution.

The long frotto plate is good as you can slide it fore aft in the 501 to get balance with the front heavy lens.

To get more elegant I would need to leave the 501/577 infrastructure which would get costly.

I reckon you should give that support a suitably military name, anodise the widget red and the 13 year olds that buy Zacuto gear would probably pay $500 for it.

I have a dozen great lenses but the ones I seems to use are the Nikon 17-35, 24-70 and the 70-200. They are fast, sharp and have sweet bokeha. Of course the Metabones Speed a Booster is the interface.
Love to have a Cabrio but even with price aside, just s bit big to me, though if I had the coinage I'd try it on for size.

I've recently aquired the Nikon 17-55 and have been loving it. It still have still lens mechanics but I just set my hard stops on my FF.

I've been frequently using the Canon 17-55/2,8 with IS.
Iris change with the camera controls is ugly slow...
For the rest, I love the lens.

Thinking about a modified Zeiss/Contax 24-85 on a speedbooster.

I never liked the 17-35 nikon for video - its that nasty gen1 AF - or are we talking something different.

Don't know quite what you mean, it's an AFS lens, the focus ring gets to a slightly "stiffer" point but keeps rotating, but it has lovely image quality. Had mine for about 14 years now (got it back in my sports photography days).

The lens I dont like is the 17-35 that is similar to the 20-35 seen on the left.. I dont know the model names but that series dont IMO work well for video. Im guessing my sports photography days were before yours :)

Haha, I had the 20-35mm before, but the 17-35mm is the one that I have! (my sports photog years were 1994 to 2005 ;-)

Why don't you like the 17-35mm, I'd really be interested to know! I love it because you can go wide to an MCU easily enough (just not parfocal at all), nice for close focusing, excellent at handling perspective distortion and the bokeh is pretty decent.
