Yet more footage

Just got an A1 a little while ago, and I thought I'd share some of the footage I've got from it. Nothing terribly exciting, the stuff included here is just some random footage from around NYC, but I know how hungry I was for clips from this camera leading up to my purchase, so I figured someone may be interested in seeing it, if only to evaluate the camera.

Here's the link: http://z31.zupload.com/download.php?file=getfile&filepath=29261 . (It's temp hosting; I haven't used this site before, so please let me know if you have any trouble with the link.) It's .wmv, and all 24f. Played with levels a little on the night stuff, otherwise it's all uncorrected.

My impressions of the camera are getting better and better the more I get acquainted with it. I hope to be shooting some short narrative/comedy stuff within the next couple months, and when I do I'll try to get that posted as well for anyone interested.

edit: Just realized this should probably go in the Canon Clips forum. My apologies; mods feel free to move.

Very nice eckatma. Love the train shot, and the boardwalk shot. Was this all default preset, or did you use a custom setting? And what editor are you using? I look forward to seeing more.

Sacksnack: It's a bit of a mixed bag as far as settings go. Some was more or less default, the Coney Island stuff was all the DVXMATCH preset from the dvinfo.net forums. I must admit that so far I'm finding a lot of the in-camera settings to have a quite subtle effect compared to the changes I'm used to making on, say, the DVX, though I'm definitely still getting a feel for what can be done with the different color correction tools.

All edited in Premiere Pro with the Cineform Trial. Quite a nice product now that I've seen what all the hubbub is about, but once that expires I'm not totally sure what I'm going to do for an HD workflow, as my computer is a bit underpowered for editing HDV directly. Luckily I don't have an immediate need for HD, so I can use this in SD for a couple of months whilst I save for some upgrades.

Great looking stuff, thanks for posting. What were you at for gain on the night stuff? Any more info on the night shots appreciated.

The night stuff was actually was +18dB, with I think both NR1 and NR2 on and set to low. Shot that with way more than I probably would normally because I was curious about noise levels and the effectiveness of the noise reduction. In a couple of other shots from that footage I didn't post, you see some slight trailing in fast moving stuff light cars (from the NR1 setting, I believe) but it seemed to work fine for stuff with a moderate to low amount of motion.

The other thing about those shots is that uncorrected they were a good deal brighter than they ended up in the footage. I played with the levels a bit and ended up pushing a lot of the noisier areas fully into black, effectively hiding some of the noise that was there.

Here are some shots from the untouched footage. In ghosting.jpg, take a look to the left of the cab's rear bumper for an example of what I mean. It's a little more apparent in motion, but not especially blatant while NR1 is kept to Low.

Thanks eckatma. I'd pretty much dismissed NR, but I may give NR2 a look with 18+. I tried a full gain up in a club last week and quickly abandoned it. Some crushing is probably helpful, too. Have you looked on an hd monitor at the night stuff?

BTW, footage sure made me homesick, been living out of the city for too long. Coney Island is made for the camera, especially on a day like that.

Ya got me drooling over this camera...

Who's the background music? What track? Cool stuff.
