Ive just been playin around with some of my lights and DVX and got this wee grab. tell me what you think...technically of course

Re: yet another grab...input if youd like

intentionally underexposed though to create a mood but yes, i admit i have a dark style...if youve seen any of my other stuff youd agree

Re: yet another grab...input if youd like

Don't know what your after Aaron, but a tad of fill from a small reflector on the right side of face might help

Re: yet another grab...input if youd like

I'm always fighting to make the nice dark look go away. But if that's what you want to see then hey...That's cool ;)

Re: yet another grab...input if youd like

I'm fascinated by the whole dark concept as well. But sometimes you need lots of light to get the dark look to work. Imagine a creepy scene in the woods on a moonless night. You still need lots of light to make it work. Otherwise there's nothing to see. Even film noir uses plenty of light in the right spots. I think at least part of his face should be properly exposed.

Also, I think shadows help to make a scene look dark. And light is your friend when you want to make shadows.

But don't listen to me, I have no idea what I'm talking about. I'm speaking more as a fan of films rather than a filmmaker.

Dark is great, but most people don't like to have to strain for all the details. Eyes are very important to visual story telling. Just my $ .02 :)

There was this little old oil painter on PBS years ago who used to say "you need dark to show light"....you also need light to show dark.

No, the little short guy with the accent, same paintings though.

Come to think of it, Bob Ross probably said the same thing.

Exactly. There is ZERO highlight in that grab. Having the right side of the dudes face hotter would work I think.

i think my little clip I posted yesterday is a great example. Not tooting my own horn, Its pretty dark, yet theres light in all the right spots to make out everything. Heres the link:

In a still, darkness may hide details, make them hard to see...but if the image is moving they tend to be more noticeable.

I think.

I was wondering if it was intentional to frame the face so far on the right. It makes it seem as if the lit pillow was the focus of the still. If it is then good, but it if it isn't then it comes off seeming accidental. It might be better to frame the figure in the middle, or to shift the camera setup so that the pillow and figure are on the right and better lit.
