Yes I'm afraid I have another adaptor.

Ed, another question popped into my head. Your original footage seems to be in 16:9 widescreen. Does this adapter allow for widescreen shooting, or did you do something in post?

Oh, and thanks for the great pic showing the elements of the focusing screen. It really helped. Keep it up my friend!!!

Oh yea, speaking of the Cavision support....

I have a quick question. With this support on, can the camera still be mounted to a tripod or steadicam; or are we stuck with hand-held?

If there is not a way to attach to a tripod, is there any reason why I couldn't just modify the rod system and put a base on it. Seems like it would be fine (and a bit more safe), but maybe I am missing something.

Sno, pretty much every rail system is designed to tripod mount. All it takes is a 1/4" threaded hole on the bottom, and you can attach your tripod plate to that.

Great news. I couldn't find a good picture of a rod system that showed the bottom, so I wasn't sure. Thanks

I did some searching for a GG replacement. An optician (a glasses maker) in my area offered to grind an eyeglass lens for me. Are there any characteristics I'm looking for, and if this sounds like it might work, what power lens do I want? I assume the curve of the lens will act the same way as a condenser, but I don't have a background in optics.

my guess would be a plano (not plain-old). You shouldnt want any correction in the glass, as it should be flat and in an even thickness so that light passes through evenly accross the whole surface.

You guys are probably going to kill me, but I found and bought a Nikon F3 D screen today. It even has the infamous "red dot".

Unfortunately, it was the last one. Otherwise I would have bought all they had and sold them for cost to the good folks here. I asked the guy at the store if he had access to any more. He said maybe. I told him that I knew of about 100 people who would want one, so he gave me his card.

Here are the details if you feel like giving it a try... no promises of course.

The person I talked to was Scott Scholz.

The Store where I bought it:

Samy's Camera.
431 South Fairfax Ave.
Los Angeles, CA 90036

There are six Samy's stores, so you might also check the other locations listed on their web site.

Sorry to relight an old flame, but maybe a few of you can find a D screen there before they vanish.

Well you are very fortunate! You have just completed the hardest part of building this adapter, so it's all down hill from here :)

A few tips about the D screen (this goes for all Nikon F3s) before you begin:

Be cautious with this part; even though it is "sealed" in a frame it is still possible for dust and fibers to become trapped between the condenser and the screen. If that happens you will have to dissasemble it and blow it out (I had to do that and trust me, you dont want to do it).

When you are making the "sandwich" only apply the silicone to the metal frames 4 corners. And onlyuse silicone: it is strong enough to held the D in place but can be peeled away if something "smears", in other words avoid epoxys or superglue.

Take it slow step by step and post with any questions you have so that others may learn. We look foreward to your footage!

Good luck on your build Snodart!

I feel like I won the lotto! I was 2 1/2 hours late to my own birthday party because I was stuck in traffic on my way back from LA getting the screen. Wife wasn't too happy with me, but she will get over it when she feasts her eyes on my DOF (yea right).

I will strictly heed your advice. Thanks!

Hopefully, people can dig up a few more from Samy's camera store.

Got it built, but I'm using a "temporary" focus screen I made by using a glass etching solution on a UV filter (which does work). All that's left is setting the distance from lens to focus screen, gotta chop a bunch off the cap. Just something to do while I wait for my Microwax to arrive.

I used a combination of Edweirdo's design and the "Home Depot" design. For the moment I feel confident but I'm sure that there's just something out there that's gonna try and screw this up.....possibly the Asian 10+ Macro.

True the Asian macro is cheap glass, but it serves it purpose well considering its price. Turning it backwards helps, and much of the aberation is lost when zooming in to the screen. If it isnt to your liking, you should try the brand "Universal" which are made in India. I have been pretty happy with mine. Or you can shell out for this:

But I tried this and it doesnt fit into the PVC base at all. But that's what this thread is all about, if someones wants to adapt the above to replace the Asian Macro that wold be awesome as the achromatic diopter has NO abberation and is as sharp as a tack.

where on ebay did u find an fd mount? all i could find is adapters to screw mounts and other things.

You probably wont find anyone on ebay selling just a FD mount by itself. You need to find a trashed canon camera and pull the mount from it. Like this:

i was on ebay last night and there was a 50mm 1.4 lens and a tele adaptor (which you can steal the bayo from for the mount) together for $50 with cases.

Hey edweirdo, i have heard that the beattie screen scratches easily but it seems if i'm making your sandwich it would be scratchproof once it's in. is there any reason (besides price) not to get one of those?

One reason would be that Bill Maxwell makes a better screen... less grain. Google Maxwell Precision Optics.
