Yes I'm afraid I have another adaptor.

My point. I'm not a Canon 35 SLR user but I won a bid on a 50mm 1.4 lens and then a trashed canon for the mount. So what arrives first? Well the lens of course and it was listed as Excelent Condition but......it rattles, maybe that's normal for Canon but I'm a Nikon person and Nikon lenses don't rattle. So then I realize that the aperature blades don't respond.........probably because it needs to be attached to the camera and connected to the various levers. But........the body I won on the same day might be able to ship on Thurs.

Plus......the drive to Home Depot was a bust because they didn't have the PVC parts I needed........ after getting stuck in traffic for over an hour because of an accident.......all for nothing! When will I learn to just go to Lowes.

Now I've vented twice.

many Canon lenses do rattle, its had something to do with the locking ring. Shouldn’t happen when connected and on the FD mount...

hmmm.... a rattle that stops when turned on....vaguely familiar :)

And no the aperture will not activate until it is locked on the mount. Sorry to hear HD didn’t have the PVC. The stuff from lowes should work, but just make sure the cap is flat enough for the mount.

Home Depot out here in Utah had a completely flat cap that I had purchased and was going to use. They had a different brand out here, not the Nibco. Something like Mueller. The cap was completely flat and would have been very easy to attach a lens mount to. I opted for a different design so I returned it. If anyone wants descriptions/item numbers of the items I found here in Utah I can get them for you. I'd offer pictures but my digital camera just broke. :(

Wow. Thanks for taking the time to post all of this info!

I would pay good money for that instructional DVD mentioned earlier. I would even host a pay pal shopping cart/store on my web space for free. Are you still thinking about making the DVD? Great stuff.

Thanks again.

That's funny you're talking about the cavision piece. I've been hacking away the last three nights to make a perfect fit. How did you make yours?

"WHY DOES ANY SELLER WAIT 5 DAYS AFTER PAYMENT TO MAIL AN ITEM?"

They do that to make sure they definitely get paid.

"Well the lens of course and it was listed as Excellent Condition but......it rattles"

You have to becareful on ebay with buying lenses. I think the rattling is from the shutter not being lock into place.

I bought a Canon FD 50mm f1.4 from eBay and it does not rattle and it opens fine. I have also noticed that the Nikon screens are going for some coin! It's difficult as to what works it seems that it's different for each person.

Thanks.......that's what I figured but it's nice to have reinforcement.

Yea......a type D went off last night for $61. I'll be playing with wax this weekend.

both my canon lenses rattle, it does not affect their performance...

re: the DVD, likely within the next month while I secure a D screen or find a replacement. The Nikon III DX2 screen looks promising.

You've probably already noticed my other post Edweirdo, but I just ordered a B III for the D2X from Adorama. It's on backorder at the moment, but they say they should have them within 2 weeks. I'll post up results once I have it tested. I'm hoping it's as good (if not better) than the D screen as the BrightView technology is supposed to brighten the picture quite a bit. One thing I have not been able to tell so far is whether or not the BIII has a built in condenser like the D screen. Time will tell.

if it does not have a condensor, you can pull one from another F3 screen, say from a grid type thats plentyful on ebay/B&H. I look foreward to yours and dijit23's Canon screen results.

Help Needed.

Help Needed.

Hi all.
Greetings from India.
First of all I wud like to thank everyone, especially Edweirdo for enlightening me with this brilliant concept. I have been closely follwing this thread and for the past 3 days I've been trying to gather the various parts to build my own adapter and I have almost succeeded in getting everything except the NIKON F3 screen. It is totally unavailable everywhere. We are shooting a Music video in another 3 days during which I want to use the adapter and I cant wait to order my Screen through Online shopping. Please suggest me some other alternative way through which I can susbstitute the Nikon F3 screen. Can I use some other screen?
Please help me.
Thanks you once again.

Thanks for the kind words, but the concept in general isnt mine. I modified an existing design to improve it. I want others like you to build one and maybe improve it some more. Be sure to post your findings, and good luck!

Experimentation......frustrating... but fun.....well.....maybe not fun all the time.

What's really interesting is when you tell someone what you're trying to do. You get all kinds of suggestions that you know won't work.......but......maybe.......just maybe.....some unknowing person will say "hey what about using _______" and a light goes on in your head. That hasn't happened to me yet.......all I get are the ones that, well meaning as they are, just won't work.

So in the meantime I'll just follow the proven methods and see what comes up.

I'm still bent on doing the wax thing. I'm waiting on the microcystalline wax but I'm the impatient type so I'll be doing lots of experimentation this weekend with the various other types of wax I have at my disposal from local arizona craft stores.

At least all of my parts are in except for the trashed Canon body that should arrive on Saturday.

Thanks again Edweirdo for all of your help........you are the man!

i destroyed some tupperware in another experiment.. it would be good for a spinning gg solution.. but a little to grainy for static

THE NIKON F3 D TYPE......

I feel the dependency on this item is hampering the progress of this adapter for many in this thread. The simple fact is Nikon no longer makes this screen, and they rarely pop up on ebay. And even then its hit or miss unless you find one that is new old stock and never opened. Used ones are a gamble as all it takes is one tiny nick or scratch to make it completely useless. It was a great solution; a fine ground screen, a built in condenser, and all for under $30. But those were the old days.

This seems to be the Achilles heel of an otherwise relatively simple DIY project. This is sad because the rest of the parts are fairly inexpensive and readily accessible. I started this thread to show off what I made and the response was great, and allot of people expressed genuine interest in trying to make this for themselves. This was great as the adapter isn’t perfect, and needs fresh minds to tackle it and make it better.

Yet everything seems to come to a grinding halt with this damn screen. For those of you lucky enough to grab one, then you have completed the hardest step. But for those who are wanting to build this and don’t have the screen, a replacement must be found to keep this project moving foreword.

Some of you have been experimenting with beer cups, Tupperware, wax, alum oxides and that’s awesome. Please keep up the good work. And this will be my part...

I just ordered the Linhof micro grain un-scored 4x5 focusing screen. I also have several condensers that I pulled from other F3 screens. This is my hope: that if the grain is fine enough to equal the D type, I will have it cut up into smaller screens (Nikon size) and pair them up with the condensers.

If we cant buy the D screen anymore, then we will make the damn thing ourselves!

If it is successful, people can team up and purchase the Linhof and split it four ways. That’s appox $15 a person. Then you can get whatever F3 screen you can get cheapest off ebay and pull the condenser. Stack the two and stick them in the "sandwich".

I will post as soon as I get the screen. It should arrive by next week. The condensers are polished and ready, all I need to do it get it cut at a frame shop. I will keep you posted on its progress.

So far this is what we have in terms of possibilities:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...ls&Q=&sku=31251&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...s&Q=&sku=371000&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/con...s&Q=&sku=402203&is=REG&addedTroughType=search

I tell you, we will have a replacement! And to those who want to build it-you will have a 35mm adapter.

Once again I will applaud you for your efforts Edweirdo. Never before in my life have I seen such an online community that goes to these great lengths to help others engage in a project. I hope that the Linhof screen works out, as that would be a much more available option for the average DIYer.

Now, is it just me, or does it seem like most manufacturers (whether it be Nikon or Canon) always seem to discontinue the focusing screen that we all seek for. The Nikon D, the BIII, the Canon Ee-A, whatever. It's like they can't justify making these screens for the small photographer market out there, but people like us are tripping over each other on eBay to get them. If this Linhof idea works out I'm sure B&H will see a large upswing in orders. :D Thanks again Edweirdo for pushing this idea forward. I'm all for people making their own adapters and I hope to post something of use when I get mine assembled.

Ed I need a little clarification if you don't mind. On your first post of this thread you said you used a 58mm macro, and then in another post further on the down the line you said you used a 52mm macro. Did I read that right or is last nights booze still affecting my eyesight?
