FAQ XVAC480 for F5 and F55 - any chance for FS7?

17:9 is wider than 16:9 but when swithing to UDH or 4K you also see more in terms of "tallness".
So the camera effectively use a larger part of the sensor in general not just in relation to aspect ratio it seems to me atleast.

Will check this out tomorrow .

There are a lot of interesting ideas in this thread. The only thing I'd add is that I have a strong hunch that the next generation of video cameras will be ful frame. I think Sony will use their 42.4 MP sensor from the a7rII, at least in the replacement for the F55. I think that sensor was designed with multiple applications in mind. Its resolution of 42 MP makes it perfect for 8K. With a custom processor the readout could be made really fast (its use of BSI would help, as would the further improvements introduced to that sensor in the a99 II). I could see 8K at 60p, with 4K at 120-180 FPS as a possibility.

The replacement for the F5/FS7 could offer the same sensor but a slower processor, thus slower HFR options. However, I think they will share the same color filter array because the next generation of video cameras will be heavily hyped with the marketing moniker "HDR," along with "full Rec.2020 support" for the future of TV, blah, blah, blah.

The next generation FS5 could use an updated a7sII 12 MP sensor-- making it a great lowlight, HFR 4K camera-- and a model to compliment the bigger cameras.

I dont see this on my F5 at all.. the frame is obviously wider but not taller at all.. ? nothing really scientific just lining up the top frame on a chart..and changing the format in the menu.. I see no difference in "height" at all.. how did you judge that you were getting more..?

I really don't care about FF35mm when they haven't nailed S35 yet. But I guess in marketing terms it would be big.

I care about:
Internal recording
Higher bitrates and bit-depths
High frame rates at S35 with better quality
Improvements in colour science

agree.. yes more than likely will be used as a marketing thing.. but its from the stills world..wasn't even on the radar a few years back.. why do we need it in moving images.. more shallow DOF.. god save us and all focus pullers.. we have already 65mm size sensors for monster budget Hollywood movies.. please not let FF35mm be forced upon us.. because alot of people started using stills lenses..?

Yeah I've a feeling Full Frame 35mm sensor cameras will be their own unique lineup. You'll have an A7s in a proper camera body at the low end and something to take in Red VV / Ari 65 at the very top.

But I have no interest in them to be honest. Hateful 8 was a grand example of why using huge sized frames in settings not conducive to getting the full benefit unsurprisingly reap very little benefit.

Can I urge FS7 owners to contact Sony and actively request XAVC480?

It'll probably fall on deaf ears but at least if it comes from multiple voices someone may take notice.

A request for larger capacity XQD cards would also be very useful.

Where is the best place to send email with firmware requests to? Is there anywhere specific or just aim for a black hole?

Some one has already asked this on the Sony f5/55 forum..(US based) and the Sony guy has reacted to it.. and will "ask the engineers" or something to that effect.. but would be decided back in Japan I guess.. interesting to see if it happens.. the F5,s it will only work off course, if you have done the official up grade to 4K internal..

I imagine moving forward that will be installed on every new camera.

Re feature requests - Sony really doesn't care. Sony US support seems nice (compared to UK) but everything has to go through so many layers to get to Japan and to be greenlit it is a nightmare.

It's the reason the Sony menus are still so awful across all their stills and video cameras. I see they've just finally overhauled them for the A99 and it still looks like someone who has never had to use a camera in the field was given the job of designing it.

They say peole are reading their official forums but nobody who can act on anything. Which is a shame because there's been tons of great ideas touted in there in the past.

So many feature requests lost

I presume the fs7 can.. if it can shoot HFR XAVC.. should be able to handle it..? .. seems the 50/60p is up around 960 (or something like that) or so Mbps.. which is on the limit of XAVC..
Yes wish they could just pay someone from Arri to fly over to Tokyo on the sly ,and teach them how to do menu,s.. they copied the camera lay out pretty well.. on the f5/55..

This is one area where I think American/European company's are so ahead of Asian ones at this point in time. When comparing things like discussions boards, website design, communication with buyers (for example Red vs Sony or FreeFly vs DJI). Products themselves are getting closer together in features and so on, I think these things are going to make a difference.

With priority pre-ordering the Kine Terra I'm taking a big leap on those things I've just mentioned..

Certainly the reason the Alexa is such a hit is because it was designed in conjunction with working DPs who had a clear defined way they wanted to work with as little fuss as possible, allied to a colour science born of years scanning and interpreting film alongside DPs and colourists.

Sony, Kinefinity and Red to some degree too still it has to be said, are still 'Features to put down as bullet points on a marketing blurb' companies. They'll give you the 0-60mph stats but not be able to show you how simple and much fun it was getting there. Arri just shows you the pictures.

Thanks Donny.

Sony should see XAVC480 as a business opportunity to sell more XQD media.

Did anyone else get a Sony Questionnaire in their email box recently? If you did there's a box at the end for some choice remarks...just sayin'.

And a free CN7 too.. or just give us all an F65.. and a boat.. :)

If these things are there unlock able in firmware - yep give them.

In still cameras even the cheap ones - in fact even phones - offer things like raw capture that were esoteric a few years ago.

-
while we are talking phones - it is worth considering that if the cameras went app based and basically had a sony phone stuck in them they would simply offer..
timecode
shot tagging
shake and location data
whatevrr people felt a desire to add

When Red released the wireless SDK and Foolcontrol came on the scene it was a genuine, much as I hate that phrase - game-changer.

Sony are about as likely to do that as I am to buy an Ursa.

Sure.. light bulbs could be made to last 100 years.. cars used to last 50 years.. all sorts of things could be done.. but they are not ,due to our great capitalist system of commerce.

If all camera,s had all the same features they might be capable of.. they would either all be $60,000 or there would be no camera,s as all the makers would go bankrupt as the camera,s would all be $500..
