XP SP3/firewire does not recognize XHA1

Good afternoon folks,

I'm going to throw my nice, well equipped XHA1 through my office window!

I will be needing to stream video from the camera on to my laptop (XP Pro SP3) via firewire (4 pin at both ends).

Seems as though XP doesn't really want to see the camera. As in, it does not show up as an imaging device, and Console 1.1 simply tells me the camera is disconnected or off when it is in fact connected, on, and recording. Canon, helpfully, has no drivers. And, even more helpfully, the user manual download link is broken.

I've been over my settings menu with a fine toothed comb and flipped everything around I thought it may be, but to no avail. The frustrating part is that I made this same setup work last year, with the same camera, cable, & computer, but I can't remember what setting I found to make it work. I do remember fighting this same battle last year, and I also remember smacking myself in the forehead when I found the solution, alas; I cannot remember what that solution was.

Places to start looking? There's a very stupid setting somewhere that I'm not seeing, I'm sure. Thanks for all the help folks!

I'll just copy and paste my post from another thread

99% of the time this happens it's due to one of three things

1) The camera is not in the same playback mode as the capture setting. Make sure that the little display on the camera selection wheel reads HDV instead of DV. In theory the camera should automatically detect which playback mode it's in but sometimes it doesn't.
2) The firewire port on the camera is broken.
3) The firewire port on the computer is broken.

If it's 2 or 3 then you need to run tests to determine where the problem lies (i.e try using another computer to see if it's the camera or plugging in/buying another FW port on the comp).

Thanks for the quick reply.

On the camera selection wheel, I see it is lit DV in blue. The HDV one does not light. This is fine, I don't care what format this is in, but where should I look at changing the settings to match? At this point, I'd rather work in DV anyways. Remember too, I'm attempting to stream video here, not just rip it from the camera. A lot of my searching about firewire XHA1 connectivity problems yields folks having issues trying to use playback via firewire.

I thought about the firewire ports, but I have two cables and two computers and any of the resulting four combinations yield the same result - however, the cameraman is able to export video to his Mac from the firewire port using one of the cables, so I'm inclined to think it's not a bad port or cable. Possibility of both computers' ports being bad are pretty slim I would think.

Which NLE are you using? The sequence setting of that NLE must match the signal that's coming out of the camera.

Forgive me for sounding silly... but could you elaborate on what you mean by NLE settings? My guesstimate is that you may be looking for what's on the PC end of it? I'm piping out (or attempting...) to Orangeware's WebcamDV, ultimately from there to do a webcast.

I'm a server technician actually, unfortunately I know very little about the world of video cameras. My half of the equation is to make the computer play nice with the camera, but unfortunately neither the cameraman nor myself speak enough of each others' language to make this work.

NLE=Non-linear Editor which is what you would normally use to get streaming footage from the camera.

I'm not familiar with WebcamDV but it sounds like your signal setting on the camera is off. Go into Menu, Signal setting and make sure that it says SD 16:9.

Cool. From the Signal Setup Menu, I currently have:
SD16:9
Frame Rate of 24F
Comp Out of 480i
Unfortunately, I've tried all three framerates it lists (24f, 30f, 60i) and none of them seem to do the trick.

What's really throwing me off is that Canon's Console software doesn't even recognize that the camera is connected. There has to be a more basic setting somewhere that I'm looking past?
