XML - Fcp

I am a new HVX owner. I followed the manual to record a test on a P2 8gb card. Hooked up to my Mackbook pro 17" (10.4.7) and sent the file to my desktop, (obviously not the place for a real project) , ready for import to Final Cut HD 5.1. The 'file' labeled itself 001AB.XML (on a final cut slate). I opened FCP, and navigated to import 'XML'. A note appeared: "please choose a translation document file". That is where I got lost. What is it I am supposed to "choose" to complete the import to FCP?

Many thanks in advance...

Michael

Copy the entire contents of the P2 card. In FCP choose Import ->Panasonic P2 and navigate to the folder containing the contents. But it is not Import XML; the proper command is Import Panasonic P2

The "Import XML" function is for properly formatted files that include links to QT clips. What FCP refers to is THEIR XML format, in no way generic. Many products, including our loggers P2Log and HDLog, create FCP XML export files.

Xml?

Xml?

Dan,
A few questions if I may.....
1) Using P2Log and FCP is there anyway of extracting/editing the XML/metadata of clips?
2) Whats happening to P2Log now that FCP is going to support 720 25p? I like the fact that using P2Log (still testing) that I can put clips into my own file structure rather than have them all dumped into the FCP capture Scratch. So will P2Log die/come down in price etc etc?
Cheers

1- Yes.
2- I think we all hope the P2 Log folks will rethink their very strict and limiting pricing and license practice with P2 Log. As for FCP Capture Scratch, that's the FCP method. When you live capture, it goes there to your project's capture folder. But you can easily move that project's capture folder to anywhere you like on yoru system, except the system drive.

Totally Agree.... its 95% of the reason that I didn't rush to buy it the second that it was announced! I'm due to buy a MacBook Pro 17" to replace my 17" G4 Powerbook and there was no way I was going to pay twice especially at the price being asked! Unless there is a change of mind with regard pricing and licencing then I'll (unfortunately) be sticking with FCP's new 720 25p support.

Download the demo of P2 Log. At least I think there's a demo version. Yes, it does let you change metadata as you need it.

I'd also wait until the new FCP update before I decided to buy P2 Log or P2 Genie at this point. Wait, P2 Genie is still a free beta, correct? But the new FCP update is supposedly going to give us the ability to change metadata anyway, from my understanding.

If it's a good implimentation, P2 Log will be obsolete. I have three computes in my studio, and a laptop for field use. Do I want to dish out $400 for something Apple's about to give me for free in a month or so? Plus, if I upgrade a computer, do I have to pay another $100 for a new copy of P2 Log?

BTW, the most important peice of data for me when managing my HVX200's files, is format. Did I shoot that clip in 720 or 1080, i or p, 50 or 24? P2 Log doesn't show any of that data. This is just for my personal work flow. But P2 Log greatly dissapoints me in not showing that data for each clip. So, I have to ingest into FCP anyway before I can see the formats of my clips.

Ben, If you'd empty your email inbox you'd have gotten our reply... P2 Log does of course show the video format and frame rate. It's displayed in the lower right corner of the document window (the open view to the P2 Volume).

Neither P2Log nor P2 Genie will become obsolete because Apple finally decided to make their import more polished.

Some of the reasons are: FCP assumes you don't want to keep the original MXF and saves and works only with the QT clips it creates. Dangerous stuff if you don't keep a copy of the original around to reload if something becomes corrupted or you can't find it on the editor, or you want to share it with someone else, etc. Therefore, I wouldn't toss that P2 Genie workflow just yet.

P2Log saves changes to the original P2 volume (something FCP doesn't do); it edits SD cards, and supports 720P50. You can also use P2Log with <gasp> other P2 enabled editors.

Besides these things, P2Log is only $199---less than 20% of the cost of another seat of FCP. Why in the world would anyone buy more than one copy of FCP if all they needed was to view clips in the field?

Oh yeah, forgot to mention FCP also requires the bigger notebooks' graphics cards. P2Log uses very little overhead and will run on any ole Mac, including 12-13" ones.

As for licensing, locks are for honest people. If you truly toss your old computer or it melts down, just contact us for assistance. [These type concerns make me laugh considering Apple's new policy of making you RETURN physical items to do a simple upgrade. That doesn't sound like a business strategy you'd let anyone else emulate fellas.]

Please Ben, get your facts straight before making wild statements.

Nope, I see no format data in the lower right corner of the document window. Nothing. Don't see it. Have it running now, nothing showing format anywhere.

Apple's license does not make you buy a second copy of FCS to run on a laptop in the field, it only says you can only run one instance of the license at a time, but can be installed on multiple computers. Unlike P2 Log. I still think $200 a pop per computer is steap for such a limited use app.

And Apple only required disks be sent in for the 5.1 upgrade, they've never done that before or since, so your not totally truthful about that fact.

FCP assumes you don't want to keep the original? How do you know, did it tell you that? It only wants to edit in it's own domain, right or wrong, that's it. To say it doesn't want you to back up anything is the most rediculous statement I've ever read. Oh, my car doesn't "want" me to park in the sun, cause the paint fades over time.

I don't make wild statements, I stated what I see, what I don't see, and what I believe. You don't have to insult me for my beliefs.

Get your facts straight, Dan, before asking machines to give you opinions of their own, please.

The video format *does* display in the lower right corner. I believe this was added with version 1.0.1. So please update.

My only point is that the demo I saw of FCP has no provision for saving or editing P2 volumes, and that P2Log will not be obsolete for various stated reasons, and it is not over priced for what it does.

Just a reminder: Your email address is bad and not accepting replies to your various tech support emails....

I got the email about an update today. I updated. It now does show the info. But playback hesitates, and sometime crashes the app. Export is REALLY slow. 15 minutes for a 2.5 minute clip. And it crashes a lot, unexpectidly quiting. Not to mention no matter what clip I select, no matter what's "selected", no matter which option I use for export (all selected, etc) it only exports the first clip and either acts like it's done, or crashes.

I've been getting email all day, not sure what that's about.

Anyway, I've got a work around, I use P2 Genie, so things are fine here now. So I'm simply deleting P2 Log and won't bother with it anymore. Sorry to have taken up your time. Best of luck.

XML is a language that applications use to share data. An XML file is just a text file. You can type one with your own fingers. Many web pages are XML data in a pretty wrapper.
Final Cut can create an XML file that contains editing data for other applications. (Think of it as an Edit Decision List on steroids.) P2 Log and HD Log can create them. The HVX-200 camera creates them too, one for each clip.
But each of these text files has its own structure. That's why XML files are useless without a translator document that explains what to extract and how. The creators of FCP and P2 Log both wrote their own XSLT translators for P2 files. Final Cut uses an XSLT translator for its Super-EDL information exchange files that is very different from the one for the P2. That's why you can't mix and match those menu commands.

importing .XML to FCP 5

importing .XML to FCP 5

When importing an .XML into FCP 5 it prompts for a translator document. Anyone know what file I should select for this?

(I was advised that this was the only way to read FCP 6 projects in FCP 5, that is, export them from FCP 6 to .XML then import them into FCP 5, which is all this impoverished social justice documentarian has on his laptop)

Advice please, thanks!

You can use XML to export a project to an older version of final cut. You need to use an interchange format that was present in that version though. When going to FCP5 I would suggest sticking with 2.0 interchange format
