XLR on GH1

How do I use my XLR with an audio technica shot gun(not battery run) on GH1.I tried to get the smaller pin adapter to fit the external mike input and expecting a phantom power from the camera for the mic. The LCD says 'pls put the power on on your external mike'.Am I doing something wrong? Secondly even if I did get power for my mic, there seems to be no way I can monitor the sound (I guess there are no earphone plugging either). There is however a an auxillary jack from the XLR.will it serve as the earphone jack?
If not, whats my alternative to monitor sound? I read somewhere that GH1 accepts phantom powered mics, did I read wrong?

Thank you/

tried with my me66 with batteries and it works. The only problem is it stuck straight to your eye ,you will have to use the lcd monitor and not the view finder

Yeah, you will need a XLR adapter or recorder (that offeres phantom power)... Something like the Halo Rig MINI helps you mount your recorder right next to the lens for optimal recording and mobility.

Only alternative is getting a mic with a built in battery (like AA) area for power.
