Hey Guys,
Just visited the red.com website and the new scarlet will be available early next year. There is speculation that it will cost between 3-5 thousand.Should one fork out money for the reliable xlh1 or hold out for the new 3k red scarlet

Yeah right, early next year...
Even if they manage to deliver on time (well first a real date has to be set of course...)
your still looking on waiting a whole year for the camera...

This questions always turn up, when sth new has been announced.
The answer is also always the same: if you need a camera now, buy one of the many available and use it as best as you can.
If the Scarlet is ready for purchase, sell your cam and get the Red.
But of course by then many more new ships will be seen on the horizon and the "dilema" starts all over again...
All the best,
Spart

But if you have an HVX definitely wait for Scarlet, even if you have a DVX but no absolute need for HD still wait. The $3k price seems quite solid. :crossfingers:

Scarlet is a professional level Pocket Cam at about $3k. Its going to be handy to get some of those shots where the footprint of a Red or Epic is just a bit too big. Its designed to work with a lot of the Red accessories, meaning I can attach all kinds of my existing accessories to bring it up to a workable system. So if I want to squeeze the scarlet into a little nook or have it look around a tight corner, I can attach my EVF on a longer cable. None of those accessories were free. In fact the EVF is just a hair under $3k itself.

I wouldn't start making a pile of assumptions about what a Scarlet production system will entail until a lot more information becomes available. Bringing a Red One body up to a decent production configuration was in excess of $50K and that was without mattebox, filters, ff and cine grade sticks.

People get too fixed on a price and then let their desires and fantasies get in the way of solid information.

If this is a serious consideration for you, then you're basically acknowledging that you have no need for a camera for at least a year, right? If that's the case, ask this question in a year and we'll be able to answer you much better. Too much can change between now and then.

Absolutely, but there are many scenarios where Scarlet would be the best buy. It all depends on what you may already have and what you need/want to do.

Buy an XLH1 now and shoot a couple of weddings over the next year and you will have plenty of money for the Scarlet when it comes out, that way you have a camera now and you can have another next year.

Or wait until fall and get the HMC-150, I think that is more of a direct competition with the XHA1 then the Scarlet.
