Hey,
A friend offered to sell me his XL1 for 1000 dollars. I currently use an HV20 and i'm looking for something with more manual controls and such. Would this be a good switch to make, or is the XL1 to obsolete these days?

BTW, i'm pretty aware of the specs and pros/cons of each.

I film for personal use. dvd's and youtube, so HD is not perticularly important.

Just sold my XL1s for $950, not a huge difference in the XL1 and the XL1s so I would say the price is fair depending on how many hours are on the heads. The XL1s treated me well over the past 5 years but it was time for me to retire it. Its a good camera with alot of manual control to practice on, something you can't get out of the HV20.

You could probably get it off him for $800.

ya. i bought an XL1S on ebay a few months ago for 850 but the seller was an asshole and backed down. Being a college student, i really don't have that much money to buy a camera, so I'm looking to get something like an XL1(s) or a DVX100. The HV20 is nice, but it's a completely different camera from what i'm looking for.

You will get much better images with the HV20 but the XL1(s) is a bettery learning tool since you will have full control over everything. You can still pull some great images off it as well depending on your final output; web, dvd, etc.

One problem to look out for with the Xl1s (not sure about the XL1) is the tape drive has some problems with eating tapes. Its a known issue from Canon and they will service it which usually solves the problem for good.
