Hey,

Does anyone still use the Canon XL1? I could buy a used one for $500 and it includes an extra battery, charger, a tripod, Shoulder strap, and Tv hook ups. A few concerns though... it still shoots to take and can't shoot HD. What do you guys think?

Depends on what you need it for. If you need HD, then it will never be good enough. A consumer grade HD cam will shoot rings around the XL1. Plus, most consumer cams in that price range also record to SD cards or have a large internal memory, so no need to worry about tapes. Tape is a dying media.

Well when the camera came out, it was arguably the best in its class. Unfortunately, that was nearly 10 years ago. If you plan on shooting alot of stuff in SD, then that might be a great deal for you but I don't imagine a big enough market exists any more for that to make it worthwhile. 5 or 6 years ago, it would be a no brainer.

I bought an XL1s 3 years ago and my DVX100B last year. For what I do - shorts, documentaries, music videos and event videography, SD was all I needed. I wanted better manual control than I would've got with a newer HD consumer camera and the cheaper price didn't hurt either. In the end it all depends on what you'll be doing with your footage.
