XHA1 polarized filter problem

Hey all,

So I threw on my polarized filter recently (or screwed it on rather) for some shots and in the chaos of packing things up I forgot to take it off. Later that evening I realized this when offloading footage and tried to get it off and it is stuck. I have tried every which way to unscrew this damn thing - I have tried countless times, had friends try it, used some clamps (delicately of course), etc, and this filter will not budge. I was wondering if anyone had advice or any sort of solution to something like this? Do I need to send it in? break the glass out of the filter to use some pliers on it? just deal with it and offer polarized shots free of charge on all my future gigs? Any help or ideas would be appreciated at this point.

Thanks in advance,

Adam

Sounds crazy, but set it in the sun. I have done this many times. The heat shrinks it a bit and makes it much easier to take off. Worth a shot.

I was going to ask about either cooling it or heating it slightly, but wasn't sure doing that would be good for the camera, if I can't get it off with the strap wrench I'll take the sun-route, thanks for the tip!

What brand filter is it? Some have a different thread pitch than the A1 and it looks like you've cross threaded the thing. Thread pitches are 0.5mm and 0.75mm.

Run a rag under hot water, squeeze it dry then carefully wrap it around the edge of the filter. These are good http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/251749-REG/General_Brand_Filter_Wrench_Set_of.html#features

When you install a filter, to avoid cross threading always make one slow turn counter clockwise till you hear a light 'click' so the threads are lined up, then turn clockwise .. don't overtighten.
cheers.

that is impossible in the world of physics...

what it DOES do is allow the plastic of the XH A1 threads to expand more than those of the metal thread rings on the polarizer.

Just out of interest, the thread pitch on the Canon A1 and A1s is 0.75mm (Japanese) and the thread pitch on the B+W 72mm UV filter is 0.5mm (German).

Even though you screw it on properly .. because of the differences you can literally pull that filter straight off the A1. Just gotta be careful. :Drogar-Shock(DBG):
cheers.

Hmm its one of those things with screw on polarisers. They seem to get stuck from time to time.

Put your cam on tripod. Lock it down. Thinish cloth material over the lens. Grip polariser with two hands, even pressure both sides and turn.

didn't want to buy a wrench strap (poor college student), so I used a large zip tie around the filter and a regular wrench to tug on it slightly. worked like a charm. thanks for the suggestions!!! :)
