XHA1 Playback and Capture issues

So i recently filmed a documentary and have over 4 hours on mini-DV tapes. After trying to pull off the footage from a tape deck, i found that i simply have a gray screen and a timecode. I went to post production at my school and they said that it could be the codec used by the XHA1 and that i would have to use the camera to rip off the footage to Final Cut Pro. However, my camera guy says that it is a problem with the codecs in the post production computers. The same camera guy also says that he is unable to meet with me due to time constraints. All i need is my footage. What is the problem here? Is it a problem with the decks or simply with the computers.
 
If you recorded in progressive mode than you will need to capture through your camera. It's because of the different method the camera uses to capture progressive frames and so isn't compatible with other HDV cameras or decks.
