hey guys,
i will show my newness with this question but i am wondering if the xha1 is like the hvx200 in that you can shoot onto mini dv or hard drive? is that correct? the reason i ask is that i am buying for a university department and i am sure they will not put the money out for p2 cards but i will have access to the camera for my use in which case i can buy p2 cards... but for the department they are going to want to put the footage on tape...
i guess the choices are: xha1, hvr-v1u, or hvx200 or just the good ole dvx100 or xl2

not quite sure what Lordybob is saying but to answer your questions the XHA1 shoots HDV onto mini DV tapes, wheras the HVX 200 will not record any HD format onto tape, if you shoot HD you have to record to a drive or P2. So on the XHA1 your options are mini DV tape HDV, Hard drive recording, or component output. The one thing that lordybob did say right is that it is truely and awesome camera for the price.

Correct me if i'm wrong.
The XHA1 on 24f can only be transfer via the camera at this point of time. Or with with a hv20. There is no tape deck on the market at this point of time that transfer the footage for editing. So you want to consider that too.

You can record in SD or HD onto mini DV tapes, then capture to your editing program using a firewire cable and the camera.

The XHa1 its not an entirely bad setup for a College department. Good picture, small, light, ok audio. The tape capture issue is the same as it was in college for me, we used teh cmaera to capture DV back then too. hardly anyone serious about film/Video art in school used the lab, we all edited at home on our laptops.

I would be careful and check what edit system the school is using. Can't get Canon's 24f HDV into Avid Xpress Pro - not supported. I would also say that many colleges shoot sport events and lectures. The 20x zoom on the A1 is really nice for long shots.

If you don't need HD, then the DVX will do. I have the Canon and have been happy with the performance.
