XHA1 color sampling

I read in a thread here that the XHA1 does NOT have 4:2:2 color sampling, though I've read elsewhere it does. What's the official word on that?

I would like to point out that the A1's sensors do sample at 4:2:2. The signal is compressed to HDV for tape at 4:2:0. However, if you capture from the component output of the A1 then you get 4:2:2. Also, if you have the G1 you can get the 4:2:2 from the SDI as well. Remember that they are essentially the same camera except for the SDI/Genlock features of the G1.

Of course capturing from the component output brings it own set of challenges...i.e., being tethered to a PC, etc.

Well I guess essentially my question is would I get a better quality color sampling using the XHA1 as apposed to a DVX100B? (in both cases, NOT able to record directly to a computer)

Somewhere in this forum Barry Green did a comparison with the different color depths. I recommend you do a search.

If I remember correctly 4:2:0 did better than 4:1:1 which is what the DVX uses.

Is "capturing with component" mean plugging it up to a computer and using OnLocation or the Canon Console to record?

For SD, you indeed do get better color sampling than a DVX because if you shoot A1 HDV you have roughly 720x540 chroma samples to play with, which can be crammed into a better SD codec than DV if you do a good downconversion in post. Heck, you even get decent 720p chroma if you do things right in post.

Not exactly. You need a card like the intensity pro plugged into a PC. Using the software that comes with the card, you capture from the component out of the A1.
