Is purchasing an hv10/20 still the only real solution to capture hdv 24f? I'm on the verge of buying the A1 but it's kinda like it has a $900 hidden fee...

Consider buying a FS-C instead, and you won't have to capture anything at all. It's completely tapeless and very fast to work with.

You'll always have your A1 and tape backup for safety, (if you have to recapture something) but if you want the ability to immediately edit your material without having to wait for hours through capture sessions, the FS-C is the way to go.

Why not use your A1 to capture? General opinion seems to be that it's not that bad for it.

Well, there's only a "hidden fee" assuming that you don't want to use the camera to capture. There's no difference in paying for an HV20 and paying for a deck.

I capture with my A1 for everything. It works great for the most part, but sometimes I have a hard time getting FCP to recognize my camera if I switch to 24f or something like that. Otherwise it's great.

the FS-C works great, just make sure you use a good firewire cable, I used an old one and it destroyed the connector at the back of the camera, after service i switched to a softer cable made for the canon dslr, and i am very careful when i put it on or off

i am curios if anybody has tried the analog out capture via capture card directly to hard drive yet
