XH-A1s and FCE 3.5 issue

Hi all:

I just brought home my brand-new XH-A1s and really like it so far. But it seems kind of wonky with my current editing setup, FCE 3.5 and a G5 PPC imac. Final Cut won't recognize or control the camera, but when I mess with the settings so far I am able to get it to do a "capture now" (but without being able to mark in and out, or any of the other good thigns FCE does with standard DV). What am I missing? What I essentially have now is a batch capture process, which is okay but means I have to captur everything and edit out the bits I don't want - seems like a real waste of storage space. Any workarounds for this?

And a related question - would the Sony cameras (eg the HVR-Z5U, which I nearly bought) work any easier with FCE?

Thanks for any help. This truly does seem like a great camera, and I'm looking forward to working with it.

I'm using the same setup with FCE and haven't discovered any workarounds. But I get by. I work in 24F a lot and it looks okay but I hear 24F works better with Final Cut Pro -- so I'm waiting for FCS3 to come out.

A hint on the A1 -- turn off AGC and keep gain at -3 except when absolutely necessary.

hey, thanks for your reply. I've been working more on it since i posted, and a couple more questons if you don't mind?

When I capture footage to FCE it looks great in the capture window, but when I drop it into the timeline the quality goes way down - very jagged, lower-resolution. Is this just the way the timeline works with HDV, and does the original clip keeps its resolution when I export it? It seems to me this will make editing very trying, and applying filters and etc. a hit-or-miss proposition. I'm very used to editing DV on FCE, but this really has me tearing my hair out!

Thanks for your help.

It may be your sequence settings are set for a low res playback on the timeline -- I don't have FCE here in front of me, but maybe someone else out there can walk you through how to access the settings for a better looking playback on the timeline.
