XH A1 Training Guide

I have not have experienced with the Elite Video's A1 training, but I did bought their training video for the FX1/Z1U. Their style of teaching isn't as comprehensive as I would have liked. Several important areas were glossed over and they don't really tell you in-depth what does what; it's more like a general overview. Plus they promised me a year of email support, which I was not able to get. Again, this is based on my experienced with the FX1/Z1 training alone.

VASST also makes a traning DVD for the A1/G1, might want to check that out as well:

VASST XH A1/XH G1 video

I purchased the VASST "Inside the Canon Xh A1 and XH G1" video, and thought the presentation concerning settings was very clear. I did have to watch it several time, while attempting to make settings adjustments at the same time, to absorb it all. (The ADD thing)

Can anyone recommend a DVD and/or book that can help get me up to speed? The only thing I have found so far is this: http://www.elitevideo.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=649

Is this a legit DVD?
Anything would be better than the minimalist user guide supplied with the camera.

Thanks

Last September I bought the Elite Video DVD for my A1 and I have to say I was quite disappointed. It is basically two guys telling you exactly what you can already read in the manual for your self. They don't go into any detail about the menu settings that matter most and spend way too much time telling you how to insert a battery & tape and what the external controls do (zoom/focus/iris etc...) :Drogar-Thinking(DBG - stuff that you should already know when you buy any prosumer camera.

I was very disappointed - I should have guessed as to the quality considering the DVD sells for about $30.

I find the best form of training is to read other people's experiences with this cam on the forums and experiment.

Cheers

E

I had the same experience with the Elite video. The production quality was very poor as well.

The Elite Video is a "gee whiz, look at that button" type video, maybe good for showing your great grandpa what your camera looks like, while you take a nap.

The VASST one is better. I got it from a movie supplies dealer in L.A. for $50 in stock. they also special ordered other VASST books at a much better price.

There are some free tutorials online that you might want to have a look at:

http://www.omnisio.com/v/7lzzDUKdjhG/the-dv-show-canon-xh-a1-tutorials

With the free ones there are ads to deal with but you can get the basics without waiting for a DVD to arrive.

All tutorials tend to be basic and therefore boring in spots. A large part will depend on what you already know.

If you know about video, but need to get oriented on the camera the free ones are fine. A tutorial for a specific camera isn't likely to tell you how to use zoom to create DOF. If you don't know what 24f vs. 60i is start elsewhere. Lighting and such can be found in other tutorial.

http://www.izzyvideo.com/2006/11/04/izzy-video-48-the-fourth-lightsmall-version/

The best tutorial at all is hands on experience. Play with the camera. Shoot every day. See what it does. Oh, and look at the presets thread here!
