XH-A1 to Final Cut ... and I'm going crazy

Hi you good people from this great forum. Please help me, I'm going crazy right now.

My new XH-A1 is right beside me on it's MultiRigPro next to my MacPro that runs Final CutPro 5.1.4. What a Pro combination, I can finally start shooting the project I have gathered all this for. After 5 years with my beloved XM2 I'm looking forward to make the A1 my new baby. But it doesn't seem to eat that mash yet.

What am I doing wrong?
I recorded in 25f (yes I'm a PAL =)
Connection via FireWire
Made a new HDV 720p Project
Log and Capture....

Then the first error messages start to appear "unable to initialize video deck".

Ok. I check the capture settings. There is: DVCPRO HD 1080i50, and a bunch of normal FireWire settings for device control.
As Capture/Input I can choose the codecs DV or DV50 or DVCPRO or DVCPRO HD.
But no HDV or anything.
Any combination of settings leads to more error messages like "unable to locate capture device". And there is no picture what so ever. The A1 is set to 1080i output.

What freaks me out to the most utterly degree, is that I was searching google and all possible forums for hours with no answer / tutorial or any information on how to capture from the XH-A1.
Am I stupid and the rest of the world can capture hdv intuitively? :badputer: This is where I'm going crazy.

Please help me with this issue, I can't believbe this doesn't work.

Your answers are much appreciated! Thanks.

Thanks for answering, but what is the "easy setup"? Do you mean "load sequence preset..." in the timeline settings tab? I already did that.

Alright, I got it. The Final Cut Pro tab in the left hand top corner.
Easy setup was the right way to go, but it would have been helpful to tell me where to find that. Would have saved another hour or so...

I'm stuck again though. I used hdv 720p in the easy setup, but all my material is unrendered when I drag it into the sequence.
What's the trick to turn the big red bar off and make everything visible in the preview window?
Any help now?

Just wanted to add: The pictures of this camera are beautiful. This is a screenshot of what I grabbed and I find it amazingly sharp for such high resolution!

I've already seen screenshots in this forum. But I guess it's different when you see hdv footage from your own hands. Too bad that those pink and green lines appear in all hdv footage i've ever seen. I'm talking about the color between dark and light spots in the picture. It is what makes it still look video.

For the above colors I used a slight abberation of the setting posted in the xh-a1 color sticky in this forum.
I find the CONSOLE program quite useless by the way. It probably has some features, but yesterday I still thought it's necessary and it's not. To set everything in the camera is easy enough.

Now, if anybody could still help about the above problem, I'd appreciate it a lot.
Thanks

The A1 doesn't record in 720p, it records in 1080i. You have to choose the right preset.

Choose the 1080p25 HDV preset.

Thanks for your replys.
It works now, very smoothly. I set the easy setup to 1080p as suggested and had to play around with the settings a bit. HDV is big!
