XH A1 & Premiere Pro CS4

I just got a Canon XH A1. I set up a test sequence using "HDV 1080p 24" as my settings. Even though Canon lists this camcorder as being 1080i, this is as close as I could guess to the proper settings in PremierePro CS4. I then tried to capture some test footage, but the capture settings would only allow "DV" capture mode. Using DV capture mode, Premiere recognizes the camcorder, and performs the capture. But using the HDV capture settings, I can still control the camcorder via Premiere, but Premiere won't capture anything saying the "Device is Offline."

I captured my test footage using DV mode, but I'm now wondering if Premiere is capturing ALL the HD information, or just SD info?

Is anyone familiar with this quirk or whatever is going on with Premiere and my Canon XH?

Can you please advise me on the proper workflow here, including export settings I should know about? Thanks so much!

It will capture HDV. You just have to make sure you are playing back some HDV content first. Then connect the firewire. Open up premiere and have a HDV timeline preset on before you hit F5 to capture. If you are connecting as DV, it's best to shut down everything and restart your computer first.

Thanks for your help. I've discovered my blunder. The camcorder was set to SD. Being so excited about shooting HD, I totally forgot it could even be set to SD. Anyway, I plan to shoot more test footage today, and I expect everything will go better this time. Thanks again.

Good stuff. I still would use HDVsplit to capture. Adobe hasn't figured out how to have preview and scene detection to break up your clips, but this free program has been doing it for years. Sometimes I wonder.

@ Sacksnack a question if you dont mind. Would there be a problem if I convert the .m2t files to .mpeg so I can view in bridge and then edit them as mpeg files in Premiere? Would this cause problems with the edit as I find that viewing the files once captured from HDV split great from Adobe bridge and then just dragging them straight into premiere a blessing for work-flow. Thanks

You can still view the .m2t files in bridge, there just isn't a thumbnail. I would think that converting the original .m2t files to mpeg would result in some quality loss.

m2t is MPEG-2 transport stream which is just another form of MPEG file. By converting, unless you have some tool to perform a lossless conversion, you will have a generation loss of quality. Not worth doing so.

Im not actually doing any conversion, just changing the file extensions from .m2t to .mpeg - am I playing with fire? I do enjoy the thumbnail preview to the slpit files. Thanks again

That would be no problem to change the file name extension. You can always change it back.
