Xh-a1 & Nab?

O.K.... I've about 95% convinced myself to buy an XH-A1........ but since I am going to NAB, I think I can wait another three weeks (just in case....)

Does anybody have any thoughts about accessory and peripheral items that I should look at in Las Vegas...... like follow focus widgets, supplemental lenses, zoom/focus controllers, etc?

I'm actually making lists this year, and marking booths on the NAB show map..... instead of wandering aimlessly, in search of Kiki..... :)

I think the #1 accessory item at NAB will be RED. lol. You should buy one and it could be your personal accessory.

I can think of about 24,000 reasons why that won't be happening..... Although I do wish I had given them a $1000 deposit last year when I had the chance. I'm sure I could turn that "futures option" for a profit, now that it looks like RED will actually happen......

If I were going, I'd get over to see the Merlin vest -- to play with it and to learn when its to be released and for how much. (no matter what they say, look doleful and say thats much more than you can afford...)

I'd want learn if there are any new (and cheaper) accesory hard drive Firestore type thingies soon to be available.

I'd particularly look for the folks who've announced the vaporous "Catapult" -- a device that will supposedly enable an ipod to become a Firestore. (supposed to have been released end of 2006 !!!)

If you track them or any other relevant vendor down, ask them if their gizmo will be able to work with Western Digital's brilliant USB powered "Passport Harddrive" -- the 4 ounce drive that can store more than 10 hours of footage and sells for less than $120 at Costco.

When you get to Canon's booth ask them when they'll enable momentary 4x mag. focus assist while the camera is rolling (when it could actually be useful !!)

And ask if they'd install an actual external physical mic switch that would enable a quick switch between XLR and on camera mike mode (without going into the menu).

(wish I could go -- have fun !)

Taylor, your question is like asking someone "how long is a piece of string?"

I think people would be better equiped to answer you if you gave us an idea as to what kind of work you do. For instance, if you like to capture charging Rhinos in Africa, I would hardly recommend a follow focus.

Anyway, I'm just being facetious but some information about your shooting style would yield you more productive responses.

I guess I should rephrase my question....

There is a whole "culture" of accessory items built for the DVX-100's...... made by companies other than Panasonic.

I was wondering what sort of similar products might be available for the Canon XH-A1.
Maybe it is just too early for the A1 to have gained much traction in the industry....

I know that I want a remote control (for as many of the controls as I can get.... focus... aperture....roll tape, etc.) because I do a lot of tight "how to do it" shooting, with the camera mounted overhead. I think that Bebob makes a LANC compatible remote that should work.....

I'll also be looking for a matte box setup... and possibly a follow focus rig.....

With the "closed door" battery compartment, I guess after-market batteries are out of the question....

And I'm going to have to find a suitable fluid head and sticks..... My Vinten Vision 10 is a bit much for the A1......

Any ideas... or rumors to pursue... along those lines?

I forgot to mention... I've already got Bella marked on my "mission map" for NAB. I'll find out what I can about the Catapult.... and I want to look at their combination FCP keyboard/jog shuttle. I need a new keyboard... and am trying to figure out if I would use the job/shuttle if I had it.....

Follow Focus

Follow Focus

Not tht I want to piss on your bonfire, but sadly the placement of the focus sensor on the A1 means that a follow focus aint gonna happen. Something im pretty bummed about!

Unless anyone has worked out a hack yet?
