XH-A1 Issues

I have had a XHA1 now for a couple of months. I've downloaded the different preset available here. But I have a few issues and wonder if anyone else has experienced these.

Soft picture when panning, as soon as the pan stops the picture is sharp again. This is really obvious when panning across labels of product. This is regardless of whether I am in 60i or 30F.

30F/24F is very jittery when panning or when the action is moving across the frame.

Which is the best settings for 60i, 30F and 24F as far as shutterspeed?

Most of my filming has been in either 60i or 30F in Manual mode.

Any tips, tricks or workarounds are appreciated!

Thanks

Generally, the best shutter speed for 60i is 1/60. For 24F and 30F, it's 1/48. These are just generalizations though and they aren't cemented facts. They are reliant on other factors like how much light is available, or how the camera is moving. As you said, the motion of panning and moving the camera drastically in 24F isn't fluid - this is a property of 24F and cinema as a whole, it's usually never fluid.

As far as keeping the image soft as opposed to sharp, try turning off autofocus? I don't know if that's what is causing your problem, because first you don't give a lot of information on what exactly is happening and what kind of look you're trying to create and second, it doesn't really seem like a problem if something in the foreground is sharp, generally, that's what you want.

To simulate the 180 degree shutter of a film camera, 1/48 for 24p. When shooting 30p or 60i, 1/60 is pretty standard. I personally like to go a little faster since I'm not trying to emulate a film camera and I like my footage a little crisper with less motion blur.

You have to pan slowly when shooting in the progressive modes or you'll get that stutter. Just like a film camera.

EDIT- Finnegan beat me.

Everything is manual, focus, iris, etc. The pans are slow (I'm a film shooter) I just don't understand why this is happening. It seems to be only with this individual camera.

I'll try to give you an example of what I am referring to.

Table top product shots. Properly lit with enough light. The products have labels on them that are very legible if I was in a static shot of the product.

When I pan the group of products, after I have started the pan you can see on a 8 inch monitor that the text gets slightly soft, soft enough that the client can notice it and comment on it. As soon as the panning motion comes to a stop, the labels are sharp again. Before the shot is taken, focus is checked thoroughly, so I know it's sharp.

Could this be an interlace issue? I even spoke to Canon tech support about this and that's all they could come up with.

Could it be an issue with the monitor? Similiar to the slight smearing that you see on LCD televisions. I'm just wondering if the captured video is still displaying this. That's all I got.

Try turning off the Optical Image Stabilization. It might be trying to compensate for the movement and can't keep up, same with tripod mounted scenic shots involving panning. Other than that, try to pan less !

OIS is turned off. Are you serious? Pan less? That will not fix the problem. That will just avoid it.

It sounds like it is unique to this particular camera.
:violent5:

Could either of the noise reduction settings be turned on? That would definitely cause blurring during movement. I'm officially out of possible causes.
