Does any one use this combo when shooting? I have never used straight to hdd recording before, and i would like to know what people think about the compatibility of the A1 with the fs-4.
Hey thetony, I'd like to know others experience with the A1 & FS-4 too. I'm thinking about getting one a little later on down the road. ????? Anyone using this combination?
What is your NLE workflow? If you are a Final Cut user you need the FS-C. It captures HDV with the appropriate QT wrapper so that you can simply drag and drop the files into FCP and edit immediately. I've used the FS-C with the A1, H1 and HV20 and it works great...it really does need an extra battery however.
Last I checked, the FS-4 will only record HDV as m2t, which is fine for Vegas and Premiere Pro, etc.
The really big advantage of using a Firestore is the fact that you can record HDV to tape at the same time, so you get the speed advantages of tapeless acquisition with the safety of tape archival.
Nice, thanks Elton. Looking at that now makes me want to get one sooner...lol... my thoughts for buying one is to be able to record without switching tapes & hopefully the FS-C won't cause dropouts like some tapes do. I haven't had any dropouts yet because I just got my A1 therefore I'm still a newbie to all this Filmmaking stuff, but I'm serious about learning and I want the best solutions I can afford... thanks again man.
Well I have a great learning lesson for you. Save your dough. Just starting out? Whats your audio, lighting, camera support set up like? These things will add value to your production the FS-C is a nice to have but can do without, without effecting your production. Worried about dropouts? Keep that cam clean and use the same high quality tapes in it.
that's a shame. my only reason for going out using the a1 is because my system can't handle native hdv. i'd love to rent an ai for a project, but because you need that cam to capture, i'd be limited to a hard sched for startinng post and watching dailies. my system can handle aic. so it'd be a perfect match to record hdv>aic straight to the hdd.
