XH-A1 Capture Problem (Video slower than Audio)

OK, so this is my first time doing this. So to keep a long story short we filmed a band with a 2 Camera Setup, recording audio through protools separately and just matching waveforms in FCP. Works great for my HV20, we rented an XH-A1 and it did not work out so well.

The Video from the XH-A1 does not match the audio from the protools tracks we recorded, or HV20 onboard mic.

Some details: I used a mono shotgun mic for a better quality onboard for the XH-A1, I do not know the model name. I checked the sound with headphones through the camera while I was there and it sounded great.

Both cameras were recorded at 60i 1080p

Audio was recorded at 48k 24bit

Has anyone else encountered this problem?

I know it is a video error because when the clip starts the audio is on cue, but slowly and slowly grows more and more off cue.

So I've been working on matching the speed for about 3 hours now, and I found that if i increased it 125% exactly it matched up perfectly.

So the camera is exactly 25% slower on video than audio, does that ring a bell for anyone?

It sounds like it's conforming the video to 24 frames per second for some bizarre reason. If you need to increase it to 125 percent, it's actually 20 percent slow, think about it like this - when doing a 30p to 24p conform, the speed is slowed down to 80 percent, so a 20 percent difference, but for 24p to 30p, that's actually being sped up to 125 percent, or a 25 percent difference.

I recorded a commercial using a seperate audio recorder and when matching up the audio to the video from a Canon 5D MKII I actually had to SLOW it down to 99.87% for it to match.

This was shot in 30 FPS.

So it's certainly not unheard of.

I shot a punk show a few months back with a G1 at 60i 1080. We only used a Rode mic but the sound was perfect. When I edited in FCP Studio I found my audio was out of sync with the video. Since I didn't use a seperate recorder and encountered a similar problem to the earlier posts, could it be a camera setting that needs adjustment?

When I run into issues like this, usually the capture settings in FCP are wrong. Try HDV 1080i60 preset in easy setup.

I had this same problem with my XHA1 when i first got it. I wasn't trying to match it to protools, but i found that the audio and video were a bit out of sync when I shot in 24p for whatever reason. I think the problem was that I was using a pirated version of final cut 5. I ended up just buying final cut 6 and that solved my problem. I don't know if it was the pirated factor, or the fact that it was version 5, but the two didn't get along, even though final cut 5 worked perfectly with hv20 footage.

I think this may have already been mentioned, but make sure your sequence/capture presets are set to HDV 1080/60i 1440x1080. (for the record you are not shooting 1080p if the framerate is 60i..)
