Xh-A1 and FS-4 HD 60GB

Thinking about going tapeless with my XH-A1 by getting a FS-4 HD 60GB for about $500. Is the FS-4 HD a good option and am I paying about the right price for a used one? Been reading the forums and some people seem to have problems getting the FS-4 to work properly with the XH-A1. Is this just user error or is it that hard?

Comments and opinions are welcome.

Thanks

Hey there,
From other people's experience and in talking with the folks from Focus Enhancements there will be problems using this configuration. And from what I have read and heard there is no way around it.

You just have to bite the bullet and buy an FS-C. I have 2 of them and they work perfectly. I am selling one of them as well.

Cheers,
Jason

I've been thinking about going tapeless myself. But my main question is when you record onto a firestore does this mean you no longer have to capture?

Anwar, Yes you no longer have to capture. When recording to an FS-C you can go right to Quicktime files. Then you just mount the FS-C to your Mac (or PC) it shows up as a drive and you copy your footage. It is that simple. I have been using my 2 FS-Cs like this for a year or so now. Works great. I still have one for sale as I am going to a Panasonic camera. And you can get them used on eBay from time to time as well. They are a huge time saver. Shoot, keep your camera in place and check your footage within minutes.

The FS-C is Canon specific. The FS-4 will work with the XH-A1, but it produces .m2t files that will have to be either re-wrapped or transcoded.

I have the FS-4 and use it with my XH-A1. I use ClipWrap to rewrap the files into FCP recognizable .mov files

I'm also looking to unload my FS-4 if somebody is interested!

how much are you guys asking for your fs-c's? also will premiere cs4 be compatible with .m2t files?

needing to go tapeless, after uploading 12 hours of footage i feel the need to take my XH A1 to the next level. anyway ive been reading for a few hours and have come up with the fs-c was exclusively made for canon cameras that would support 24p and 30p. There for is the Focus FS-C the only DTE RECORDER that will work on the canon XHA1?

Green Tree Digital: Interested in your FS-C if still available.

I use the Sony MRC-1 and record to 16 gig compact flash cards. 16 gigs equals about an hour of taping. By the time you buy the battery and charger and cards, you are looking at about $1200-1300. Works seemlessly. I am happy with it. Shoot to card only or tape and card for insurance.

I am sort of a noob here I just took out a extra student loan and bought a Canon XH A1 with the FS-CV DTE, after taking like 5 mins of practice footage I proceeded to move my footage to final cut pro. Once it is in there my footage flickers like mad. I tried to use the flicker filter and it kindof helped. I also noticed that my footage looks kind of diluted. Any ideas on whats going on?

What do you mean by Canon-specific? M2T files are the standard disk file images of MPEG-2 transport stream. Sony uses the same format in its recorders. Blu-ray uses pretty much the same format (with additional 4 bytes in each 188-byte segment).

If you wanted to say that FS-C can record into MOV container, then this is Mac-specific format, not Canon-specific.

I never said M2T files are Canon specific. I said the FS-C line was built specifically with Canon cameras in mind.

The post before mine was about using an FS-C Firestore to create quicktime files that you could drag and drop into a Mac, presumably for FCP. I provided another way to get Quicktime files from a non-FS-C model.

So ... what's the problem?
