XF300 odd sound at startup

Hey guys -

I've just picked up a used XF300 and there is what I feel to be an irregular shudder sound coming from the lens assembly on startup. The seller assures me this sound is normal - I sent him a sound file of the sound - but it's impossible for me to verify in person because there are no display or even rental models here in NYC (which is in itself pretty incredible).

The file is too small to upload to vimeo, but I'd be happy to send over the m4a sound file (78kb) to any XF300 users or owners to give a listen and let me know what they think of it... fwiw I also posted this question here, with the sound file attached.

Thanks for your help!

Steve

It's normal mine does it too, I think it's cleaning the sensor. You only get it on powering to record mode rather than play back.

I couldn't download the sound file earlier as I was at work, but that's 100% exactly the same noise mine makes, direct from Canon, I'm sure it's not a problem but an initialisation sensor cleaning or such like.

Wow, thanks for the replies guys. It's such a stammered sound, certainly not confidence inspiring. My FS100 is silent and solid, as is the EX1 I've used.

So cowpunk, you've heard and experienced this in multiple XF300/305's every time on start up?

I guess I still draw a distinction between normal and not knowing what is creating that sound. I've asked Canon Tech for input on this and have yet to receive a reply. I am also surprised to have not encountered mention of it in a single review.

One more thing... there is an additional noise that I hear when I rock the camera - simply tilting the XF300 on its horizontal axis (think a rocking boat) induces what feels and sounds like a solid weight shifting click, as if something is loose in the lens assembly, or perhaps the ND filters rolling from side to side. Either of you guys or anyone else have this experience as well?

Thanks again for the continued responses...

Yes, I've heard it on every 300/305 I've ever used (and I've done a lot of multi-cams with that line). It is 100% part of the cameras startup procedure, whatever it is doing. Also, the noise you're hearing when you rock the camera is part of the camera lens' floating element system of the optical image stabilisation. Rest assured, you're camera is operating exactly as it's been designed to do.
