XF100 advice

I have a Canon XF100 and have a problem with the 3.5mm mini jack. I was told that the jack needed to have 4 segments in order to work. However, my understanding is that 4 segmented jacks are for things like Iphones which use the 4th segment to control things like volume on headsets. I called Canon and they were not clear on whether this camera would work on a normal stereo 3 segmented jack (Left/right channel and nutral). Can anyone confirm that a normal stereo lapel mic with three segements will work with the XF100.

I can confirm you don't need a four segment plug - those mainly used to be for AV video out. Don't know about stereo mics, my jack plug mics are all mono.
