XDCAM EX Firmware Upgrade March 2010 USA

Has anyone noticed any problems with your specific Picture Profile settings or other settings being changed or wiped out with the EX1 update?

Has anyone noticed if this upgrade improves the camera boot up time?

There's also talk about this version reducing the media record capacity from 57 mins to 55 mins. Any confirmation?

yeah, my 16GB cards went down to 54 minutes and my 8GB dropped to 26 minutes. I'll live with it since i'm now able to shoot 60fps on my Sandisk Extreme SDHC with no Media Errors.

Interesting.. maybe the original capacity was inaccurate and Sony corrected the readout bug?

I downloaded the updates, but am holding off on installing them because they appear to be irrelevant to my application, being SxS only. Now if it shaved a few seconds off boot time, that might be worth considering, but if not, it's only useful for SHDC card use.

Hang on, this was a risk you accepted accepted when you decided to try to do it yourself. If you arn't willing to take that risk then you pay Sony to do it. If a problem happens in the service centre they will fix it for free but if it happens at your home then I don't see them as liable. How do we know its not a memory fault or virus on your computer which caused the program to crash. We can not absolutely eliminate your computer as the problem, after all it is working for others just fine.

If we want to see Sony reverse their decision to allow us to take responsibiliy for upgrading our own cameras, this is the way to do it. The only thing I would like to see from Sony is a reasonable cost to repair a bricked camera. Cover your costs Sony but don't try to milk the market on that one. If Sony do find there is a bug in their program and it is their fault then sure, they should take responsibility, but lets not just assume flat out thats what has happened.

Just my opinion of course, but if my camera was bricked doing the upgrade I'd be sorry and probably angry, but only be blaming myself for taking the risk (unless of course it was shown that all cameras were being bricked).

I read that this firmware upgrade only works on cameras that are at 1.13 and above. It may 'brick' cameras with earlier firmware revisions. Ninofilm, what was your camera's revision level before you attempted to update it?

Another factor is crappy motherboard chipsets on some computers, causing poor USB port communication. VIA chipsets are notorious for all sorts of these problems.

There's a document somewhere from Sony that recommends avoiding DIY firmware upgrade if your present FW is not at 1.13 or above. If this is accurate, then quite a few of us are at grave risk if we attempt to upgrade older FW.

Not sure if it was mentioned anywhere:

If you are planning to use a MxR Adapter with 32GB Transcend Class 6 card on a PMW-EX1R, you will need that March firmware upgrade.

The 16GB Transcend + MxR does works with the prior firmware version of the PMW-EX1R.

RE: Upgrading from version: I didn't see any reference in the documentation about going from 1.13 only, or any reference to any other version. I went from 1.11 no problem. If you can find a formal reference from Sony then I'd love to see it to add the warning to my little video.

Considering the critical importance of this issue, and the great value of making such an update, it would be very helpful to have explicit documentation of this contention. Since I have a 1.06 ver EX1, it would be extermely desirable to be able to install all the updates...but, of course, I can't do that with all these doubts.

Can anybody give a reference to an official Sony statement on this?

I should but I didn't even read the documentation before I did it. I just watched GuyB's video tutorial and got my EX1 upgraded to version 1.2 without a problem.

Thanks, GuyB.

I should have bookmarked the link when I read it. At the time, it was just "that's interesting, guess I'd better wait until I really need this update, or wait for the next update" and moved on to other reading. Now I can't find it, because I don't remember enough surrounding details about it.
