Heya friends...

I've crossed that bridge. Putting a reel online was one of the most difficult decisions - for a hundred reasons. Eventually it had to be done. It's just over four minutes long, with a list of credits at the end that'll be too boring to watch for you...

You can download a smaller version (427x240, 34 MB) here, and a larger version (640x360, 70 MB) here. Please do Save As... before playing.

It's far from polished, but I thought I would share anyway. Even though it's titled as a 'Film Maker' reel, it's for Operator/DP kind of jobs.

A few images from the reel:

I'll appreciate your input.

Jerry,

There are some wonderful shots in there! I love the diversity.

Overall, it felt a bit long and a little repetitive to me.

I think if you tightened it up it would be awesome.

Thanks, guys.

Well - I feel like I need to address some of the comments. The repetition is kind of intentional - it actually tells a story, even though it may not be obvious to the uninitiated. I am seeing the 'bit slow', and I am already thinking about where to make it a faster pace.

Here is the dilemma, though: If I market myself as a DP, I feel that the imagery need to 'sink in'. In other words, the viewer needs to register what's actually in the picture. I realize that a lot of it happens on a subconscious level even with a faster cut, and if I were editing a film for 'general audience', I might choose entirely different pace than if it's for a potential collaborator on a film project. I might be totally wrong, though - it's just my gut feeling.

I hope to have another cut some time next week - more polished. If anyone has specific suggestions on which shots you feel are too long/uninteresting/redundant, feel free to give me your honest feedback.

Yes, all but two shots are with DVX100a. The two shots of horses were in HVX200 in 60fps. I was driving through central Pennsylvania when I came upon these beauties, so I just got out of the car and 'experimented'. I am hoping to get more HVX footage into the next version of the reel - but that will probably happen later this summer.

Cheers!
