X920 or FZ 1000

I am fairly new to Video

I have been toying with getting a X920 for a few weeks as a carry about Camcorder for family events and holidays etc.
I was choosing this for the ease of use quick AF etc as the wife will also use it

However with the FZ1000 now about this has come into my consideration.

How will the FZ1000 compare to the X920 reference video quality (not including 4K) and low light as it
has a 1 inch sensor will it out perform the X920 in low light etc

Are there any distinct pros and cons of either??

Thanks for any help

Phil

The X920 is smaller, lighter, and more idiot-proof. In low-light, the FZ1000 will definitely produce better video quality. Plus the FZ1000 shoots in 4k. If you care more about video quality, go with the FZ1000 (or even better still Sony AX100 or Panasonic LX100). If you care more about convenience and portability, go with the X920.

I sent the FZ1000 back…..did not like it at all….the quality of the build, quality of the video….nothing….
Sure it shoots in 4K but it still has that Panasonic "noise"…..
I wanted the FZ1000 so I could use it as a 2nd camera to my SOny RX10.
I thought it would be close enough in quality and heck it was cheaper
then getting another RX10 and it shot 4K!!!
Wrong - the RX10 is a better camera all the way around.
I can wait for the SOny RX20 instead…..

I own the X920 and have shot a small amount of test footage with the FZ1000, here's how I see these two cameras...

X920 Pros
- Small handycam size body
- Parfocal zoom lens
- 5 axis image stabilzation

FZ1000 Pros
- 4K internal video recording
- 1 inch sensor ( produces less noise than the X920 )
- Records progressive footage without telecine ( X920 footage is a pain in the *ass to have to reverse the telecine encoding to get progressive footage )
- Longer zoom range than X920
- CineD image profile ( better dynamic range than X920 )

If the FZ1000 had a smoother power zoom I would consider replacing the X920 with it. ( I've tried two FZ1000 cameras and both showed a kind of "twitch" when zooming the entire range of the lens )

I don't understand this one. I have a TM700 that shoots 1080-60p avchd where the underlying *.mts files are perfect 1080-60p.

I would guess you're not getting the original *.mts file out of the X920 if you have to do anything with it. The MTS files from my TM700 are virtually identical stream to those I get from my G6 in mp4 mode at 1080-60p. Just a slightly different wrapper. If you are running an older mac os, there would be the problem, as they didn't recognize the newer flavor of avchd 1080-60p when it came out.

Just curious where you're seeing the issue crop up from? I was actually thinking of picking up an X920 specifically for it's OIS in a tiny package. I can't imagine Panasonic have gone to some different file format for the newer version of their top end consumer camcorder.

Cheers,
Pete

I am referring to the 24p footage that is recorded in telecine mode, and then you have to run it through a reverse-telecine app to extract proper 24p footage from this.

I don't know why Panasonic are still making anything with a telecine recording mode. This should have been standard 24p just like the 60p frame rate.

Sorry Dingo, forgot about 24p. I don't shoot it very often or ever for that matter. Acton sports and wildlife work that I do look much better at 30p.

Cheers,
Pete

If you have any need to shoot photo, FZ1000 will be the one to buy. If you alway need to shoot event non-stop for over 30 minute then X920
All round except for weight and size FZ1000 is a better camera.
