WTF? GoPro acquires CineForm

Because I feel that if they were only interested in incorporating cineform into their existing products, they would have just licensed the codec from Cineform, like everyone else. But instead, they just completely bought the entire corporation. I'm sure they have something up their sleeve.

What makes you say that? In my mind, it brings that much, much closer to reality. As someone above said, a software manufacturer was just acquired by a hardware manufacturer. A hardware manufacturer that specializes in cheap, affordable systems. Now that they own Cineform I'm sure in the coming months/years we'll see them integrate that market mindset into the software side with Cineform with eventual cheap recorders, complete capture systems. etc. This brings cheap cineform recorders much closer to reality than lets say, someone like Arri acquiring Cineform. Exciting times for digital cinema! Even if they only get around to having the Gopro acquire directly to cineform, that would be effing awesome

+1 to the Nth power.

Plus I never had an interest in a GoPro until now.

Maybe, unless they had a product in mind for which they didn't want any competition. It could be an 8-bit 3-D product for which they need a better (more efficient) codec to achieve the quality level they want with a data rate and storage requirement that they find manageable. But that doesn't mean they will create a standalone high-bit recorder, or continue to license the high-end codecs to third parties.

I don't see why they wouldn't license it out to third parties. GoPro is pretty much a one trick pony... they only make their helmet cams. Unless they were planning on branching out into making recorders, not licensing it out wouldn't make financial sense. They already have an established client base, and there are already third parties using it.

My guess is that in working with Cineform to develop 3D for their own products, they realized that there was a huge potential to license out the fruits of their labor to other higher end 3rd parties.

for the type of camera it is for exreme sports and fast action, i totally don't mind it not being 24p. 30p and 60p smoothness are perfect for these kind of videos...

This has been out for a couple years now: http://www.cinedeck.com/content/#/?type=serial

Nope. The Cinedeck is software based. It's a mini-computer. Everything out there that records directly to Cineform is software-based. Wafian recorder, SI 2k, Cinedeck... All computers running software to encode. Hardware-based encoders will be smaller and less expensive. That's why this is a big deal. Gopro will have to develop a hardware encoder to fit it into their tiny little camera.

One thing for sure, buying Cineform has attracted a lot of interest in GoPro, so it was worth it for that reason alone.

Launching the demo of the 3D GoPro at CES in January was a huge success for GoPro marketing wise, quite a lot of potential partnerships and professional contacts were made there.

Smart cookie that Mr Woodman.

GoPro Cineform Studio has been built from the ground floor completely separate from the famed Firstlight and Neo products. It will allow adjustment to 23.98. This product is what you should be keeping your eye on. Its bringing the $1000+ software to consumers for free and when complete, will allow photo,video,2d/3d,editing, and correction to pennyless consumers and kids with too much free time. Not to mention the Cineform codec itself.Screen shot 2011-04-12 at 4.15.08 PM.jpg

Would love to see GoPro do some hi-speed versions soon: 120fps at the largest possible res, probably 480p at first, hopefully 720p soon and people will pay more for it, imo.

I just got done shooting my first 3d test with the new GoPro 3D system.
Quality results and easy to use - did I say easy to use???
I already had one GoPro HD cam. So for about another $350 I am shooting 3D...
OK it is not an EPIC 3D rig but for getting your feet wet in 3D I can really
see where I can use this. It can also take 3D stills. I think GoPro is still
updating the CineForm software - looks like a future update to output 3D stills.
I am going to do a little film this weekend with my son diving in 3D.
On the MAC you need to be running Snow Leopard 10.6.
