Write Error, Check Card. Brand new GH1 for sale....

Seriously. Panasonic SD cards?

Just buy a card from Sandisk's or Lexar's professional ranges and be done with it. It's not like they're that expensive nowadays.

I have Transcend 16GB Class 6 card. No problem so far with GH1 but then I haven't recorded longer than 5 mins. Now I'm thinking I should've shell out more for better card.

Shot a friend's wedding this past weekend using a Class 6 16gb Transcend, no issues - the ceremony file was about 45 minutes long without issues (1080p24, locked off on a tripod).

I've also used a couple different 8gb cards (again Transcend & Class 6) and haven't had any issues yet, but that's been with clips lasting 5 minutes at most so YMMV.

As best as I can tell, the GH1 isn't overly picky about memory cards. At 17mbps, why would it be?

I just shot over an hours worth of footage with the exact same card and had no problems at all. I'm guessing their QC isn't as good as other companies, but my two cards seem solid. I've shot several shoots with them no problemo.

Oh and the panny SD cards are such a rip-off!!! Man, we pay enough for those batteries already.... Kingston or Crucial or Corsair are pretty reputable brands that should have cheaper cards. Agree with the poster about newegg and their reviews. Very nice resource and great prices too.

Oh and I'm about 98% sure that Panasonic just rebrands their cards from places like Sandisk or something.

Speaking of state-of-the-art vs last-week's-state-of-the-art, I saw today while doing my monthly tech catch-up that 64GB cards are due to debut around the end of the year. where will it all end, etc.

Try Sandisk class 4 video HD's. I've had a lot of success with them and they are fairly inexpensive

To repeat what I posted in the last "card failure" thread, I had a Transcend 8GB die in another piece of equipment, but the replacement has been fine. It had better continue fine, as I'm recording a pro symphony orchestra onto it tonight for broadcast in a week or so... I've been using a Panasonic 8GB (which I already had) in my GH1 with no problems and I use Panasonic 4GB cards in my Sd5 (the cards came with that camcorder, thank you Panasonic).

If I may interject here I read a lot of chatter about using Class 6 SDHC cards.

With a minimum write speed of 4 MBps and the GH1 max datarate at just under 2.25 MBps is there really a need to use a Class 6 card?

It seems the Class 4 has more than enough "overhead" on its minimum write speed to handle whatever the cam throws at it. Besides as prices come down you can always upgrade to faster or larger cards as you go.

Or am I talking out of my ass here? :D

Anyone?

Oh and swyz? Sorry to hear about that lost footage. Part of the reason why I'm keen to leave tape behind....Now? eh. Still want to leave tape behind. :D

sincerely,

ian

theoretically, sure. but what's to stop you from shooting mjpeg which is an average of 4MB a sec, where class 4 wouldn't do the job. No sense in getting a card that can get by when make an investment it'll work for you a lot longer.

Understandable, but if MJPEG is not something I'm interested in shooting at this time then Class 4 cards should be more than acceptable for all flavours of AVCHD on the GH1 or even cams that shoot at 24 Mbps like the Canon HFS10/100. There's still plenty of that data-write "overhead" on the card....correct?

Thanks again for the input.

I've had Sandisc Extreme III cards for a year or so with no faults whatsoever. But I have one Transcend card that had serious issues.

Using two 4GB and two 8GB Sandisc Extreme III and they work flawless.

Without a doubt, on a thousdand quid camera, buy the best cars available for it. Period. Over spec them if need be, just get the cards that won't ruin your shoots.

There is no professional reputation worth wrecking saving yourself a few $$ on a card.

I own both the GH1 and HPX171 and I'm pained to say that P2 is expensive for a good, no, damn-good reason.

About Class 4 vs. Class 6: the HMC150 manual specifically says to use Class 4, and its maximum data rate is higher than the GH1's. So should you be safe when recording AVCHD from a GH1 on a Class 4 card? I would say you definitely should be.

However -- be aware that the GH1's manual specifically states to use Class 6 cards. Why is that? I think the speculation about MJPG mode is probably correct.

maybe also for burst shooting full RAW stills...

I have the GH1, 5D Mark II . I have only a few hours on the GH1, but not problems so far.

I'm using Transcend , 16GB & 8 GB for the Gh1.

I have 5 16GB cards for the 5D Mark II and those are 3- Kingstons and 2 Transcend CF cards.

All are class 6 / 133X.

My opinion is that the Kingstons are fine as are the Transcends. The transcends maybe 2-5% faster.

I'd also make the observation that as stated earlier, I would stay away from the 32GB for a year or more until they get there manufacturing down.

Both brands offer a good bang for the buck. I also have an 8 GB CF high end card (ie 2-3x the price) and I don't even use it as there have been a few reported problems of it being too fast for the 5D.

As to shooting a wedding, I wouldn't shoot anybody's wedding with just 1 camera. Find yourself a 2nd camera or a friend with a camera. Also, get a real fast lens.

I recorded 90+ mins of continuous 720p video last night on the Transcend 16gb Class 6 card without any problems.

I had this happen once with a card that wasn't properly formatted. I've since had a week long 10 - 12 hours a day professional shoot and never had it happen again once.

Just format your card. I use the cheapest class II's I can find. Zero problems. Hours and hours of footage. Car mount. Hazer. Hand held. Dolly. Speedrail. Crane. No issues here.
