Write Error, Check Card. Brand new GH1 for sale....

"Write Error, Check Card" about 20 minutes into recording a file. (I'm using a Transcend 32gb SDHC class 6 card, formatted in-cam.)

This just cancelled my plans on using it this weekend at a wedding, and cost me a SH*TLOAD of money in accessories AND in time planning to use this camera.

I'm going to try and get my money back on it from Adorama...or eBay it...and keep saving to get an HMC150.

So far, the GH1 is a POS in terms of using it for a paying gig. Fun toy, though...got some nice footage of my LIVING ROOM before it went defective.

it sounds like a memory card issue, not the camera... do you have another card to try?

btw, this is just my opinion but the HMC150 uses the same type of cards and you could run into the same issues...

Since Panasonic cards seem to be non-existent, I'm worried that's why no problems are being reported with them. I'm scared to pay 3x more for their card and have it happen again...but I guess it's my only option at this point...wait...wait...just like I waited for the GH1.....and do my work with the old FX7 in the mean time.

At this point, I can't even get the GH1 to turn off...it's frozen on a live-view frame...with the power switch off!

Thanks!

Try formatting the card in-camera.

Also try a different SD card, doesn't matter what size - even if you have to borrow one from a friend it's easier than getting shot of the GH1 altogether just for a none-issue, unless if it is actually a faulty camera.

Yeah, I had to grab an 8gb Transcend card out of a Zoom H2, and of course it worked...just like the 32gb card worked all last night.

Yeah, it's a card issue...I just find it hard to believe that it's a brand issue. It basically "bricked" a $109 32gb card...I can't even get it to format in my computer now. (I formatted it 2-3 times in the camera before it bricked.)

This really wouldn't tick me off so much, if Panasonic actually sold SDHC cards to go in their cameras...even at their huge mark-up...if it would just make the camera work.

Anyone have suggestions on other brands? I'll sell a few pints of blood and hit the local camera shop to get one before the weekend's shoot.

Don't be discouraged by a lousy memory card.

If you are a wise wedding photographer you will use a few 2 or 4 gb cards instead of 16gb cards. I have a 16gb card but would never use it for a wedding. If you miss photos for an important moment just give them a few enlargements.

Wow, B&H lists all of the Panasonic SDHC cards as "back ordered" and "out of stock." Wild.

Amazon says they have 'em in stock. 4GB cards are $12, 8GB is $69, 12gb is $61, 16gb is $190.

If you can live with 20-minute loads, it looks like the 4GB card is the way to go.

J&R is claiming they have Panasonic 16GB Class 10 cards in stock, for $99. They have the 12GB class 4 for $50, and the 16GB class 6 for $90. Lots lower than Amazon, and they say they're in stock.

Not so easy for video...especially for a cheap one-man wedding video show like mine! When the vows are gone...they're gone. I HATE my HDV tape cams...they dropout at the worst times...but the tapes don't quit functioning completely...as long as you keep the heads clean.

I guess I'll just go start trying random brands...somebody has to do it. What's blood selling for these days? ;)

Thanks Barry! I'll give J&R a shot...and put off using the camera this weekend. I can get most weddings on a 16GB card...was just wanting the 32GB to know I'd never have to fool with changing cards, ever, during the course of the night. It was part of my fantasy of going tapeless. :D

You may need to use 2 cameras then
1 that you use for when they exchange rings
1 that you use for the kiss

It goes by fast but it's quick to change cameras. I haven't done a wedding video but you may want to get an EP1 or a T1i as a backup camera... or just a video camera if you don't do photos at all

Two cheaper VDSLRs with different lenses will give you better shots than if you had say one 5D Mark II... if you can afford it

It is a known issue with Transcend cards to cause problems along with other cheap cards. Just go to newegg.com and look at the reviews. They usually cause people problems when used with video / photos direct from the device. It's recommended to get a sanDisk. You pay for what you get really.

Pull the battery, Out!

Why are using 32Gig transcends. Man that is pushing it. , 16gig class 6 and a good brand is the max. State of the art memory vs last weeks state of art. I'll stick with last weeks. The more memory cells you pack in those tiny plastic cards, the more likely your going to get issues with the latest technology. I use 4gig or 8gig Kingston Class 6.

Any how, just my opinion based on years of dealing with memory.

I guess I got spoiled using the 16gb Transcend in my Panasonic SD9, which works flawlessly...even if the battery dies during recording (happened twice under weird circumstances/weather delays during weddings), which also records 17mbps 1920x1080/24p. I guess the same technology couldn't be applied to the GH1 which costs $1000 more.

I also use Trandscend cards in my two Zoom H2's and my Tascam DR-07, and I think even in my Creative MP3 player...but those are just for audio and video playback.

I've used nothing but Sandisk Extreme III CF cards in my DSLR's, and never had a problem. Maybe Sandisk will be cheaper than buying Panasonic cards for the GH1...I like that brand...and can't gamble with my paychecks. ;)

Thanks!

I have Transcend 16GB Class 6 card. No problem so far with GH1 but then I haven't recorded longer than 5 mins. Now I'm thinking I should've shell out more for better card.

What if it still doesn't turn off? lol, do I call Ghostbusters? j/k. Obviously I...never mind...;)

I'm using a 32Gig Transcend because it simply should work. I'd put Transcend in anything (until today) before Kingston...Kingston isn't "good brand" for me...I bought some for a PC I was building which turned out to be garbage. That turned me off to the brand...just like I won't buy anymore Transcend for video. I'll try a Sandisk, but am gonna run the camera about 20 hours before I trust it. :)

Thanks!

PappasArts is exactly right here. Along with the known failures, the high volume on this card is my second guess. I over looked the 32Gig part. Most surely your problems will stop once you get a better card.
