Wrangler Road Trip Spot shot on 5D MKII

This piece was shot in the Californian desert, Downtown LA and Venice beach. The idea was to capture the feeling of a USA road trip with a vintage look. It was a very fast paced shoot done in conjunction with a stills photo shoot, so I used a very simple kit and enjoyed the freedom that comes with shooting on such a small, light camera.

For the color grading I used Red Giant Software's Colorista II for all the shots. I use a waveform monitor and vector scope all the time so I can control accurately where the shadows, skin tones and highlights sit. It also helps with maintaining consistency across multiple shots. I usually "stack" colorista filters so I can build on the look. It has primary and secondary correction too. I also used the selective color correction tool in there so I could isolate the blue of the sky and send it towards green and turqoiuse without affecting the skin tones, which I wanted to be warm.

thanks, i'll have to look into colorista. appreciate the tips.

Looks great.

Did you do the Colorista work in AE? Or Premiere or FC? I have Colorista Demo but the functionality in Premiere is less than ideal. Which leaves working in AE where it works great. Wondering how others are using it.

Were you working on direct h.264 clips or did you implement a transcode?

Great look - top-notch from start to finish. The compositions, edit... grading - everything is fantastic. Still can't believe those boys made her ride in the back! Chivalry is dead.

Hi Rallymatt,
I use colorista II in final cut pro and I transcoded the footage to Apple Pro Res HQ for the edit/grade. I never leave it as h.264

I never realized there was an extended cut of that. It's much more bold than what I saw air.

I've never seen it on TV or anything. But the director, Jonathan Glazer is an absolute masterful filmmaker. If you haven't seen his feature, Sexy Beast please do so immediately. An extremely underrated film.

He does a lot of cool ads and music videos too to my knowledge
