Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Well yeah...

You guys are posting and discussing other work in MATTS Thread. Start a New Topic! :)

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Too bad he is still useing other peoples art without permission.Time to grow up and work in the real world. You have talent no dought. But as a producer I would fire you for turning in something without a release. Correct me if I am wrong. 8)

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Man, thats not what this is about. He is creating a portfolio. Creating a really good reel of stuff he can do and showing off his talents. His talent is not creating a song but expressing that song through video. Thats where he is going to get noticed. You are all talking to him like he doesn't know that the stuff he is using wont fly if he is trying to sell it. He is having fun and working on his skillz. Thats all. Im probably gonna do 20 music videos with other peoples songs just to practice my thing. Then once the artists come to me. I will say, "Yeah, ill hook you up"

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

I agree; establishing a portfolio in this matter is fine. I liken it to a Spec Commerical. I also agree with Scott in that I personally wouldn't want to invest in something of this LENGTH with material I really have no rights to. :
(

Haveing it in the portfolio is a wonderful thing, but hjaving it be locked into a portfolio is another.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Man this thead will never end. I was planning on doing a spec music video for a song from the play Wicked just because my daughters love it and want to be in it.
It gives you something fun to practice with like the contest we are currently in. Doing a MV for a band that wants it may be restricting as I am finding out and the creative juices get nixed.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Elvis, if you were a producer, you would have rights to the music before hiring me in the first place ;). I used these songs as examples of what I could do with music... I'm not going to get anywhere by posting a site with an empty reel and a promise that I can make videos. I needed something to show, in order to "grow up," and get some real work. The next two additions to my reel will have rights. I think Alanis would understand... I haven't made a dime off my reel. :P

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Hey Matt glad to talk to you. There are plenty of unsigned bands that would benafit from your talant. Now to set things straight. I only made my original coment was because you had a big warning on your orginal web page about not using your material without your permission. Respecting rights go both ways. Don't you agree? ;DAnd that was all I was saying. Now go out and play make your videos build that reel. I live and work in the real world where rights and clearances abound for an up and coming filmmakers. Good luck with all your projects! 8)

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Hey - this is no different from creating your own commercials or spots just so you can get in the door at an advertisng firm.I saw an article recently on a guy who made a watch spot for his reel & got the gig from the another watch firm. I come from the music buisness myself & there is nothing wrong with what matt is doing here - if anything it helps promote the act.As long as no profit is being made it is no different from performing a cover of a song. I would go as far to say choose any fav song outhere & shoot your promo then send it to the bands mangement or the record label - more than likely they will send you a treatment for the bands next song rather than a a letter from their lawyer - if they like what they see.Nowadays major labels simply haven't got the time to take issues like this seriously unless you have made a huge profit from their artists work.
There is no copyright issue's here at all - go out & shoot a scene from your fav film / a scene from shakespear or to your fav song & if its any good - you will get a deal or at the very least some critcal feedback on your work - its not worth their $$$ to contact thier lawyer & a get a letter written up - believe me - I know 8)
Once you get to the "real world"  or "elvis's world" & clinch that deal then your company can worry about clearing & liscensing etc as this is the "norm" for commercial practice & gain

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Ever made a spec commercial for a recognized product?

Whether there's a technical copyright violation occurring here (which, I guess there may be) this is a long-standing practice in the film & video world. In advertising, everyone, everywhere, makes spec commercials to establish themselves. Our own "Essence of the Force" is really an 8-minute spec commercial for a soft drink product. Now, using that soft drink can in the video involves a host of copyright problems: the logo itself, the trademarked name of the product, the artwork on the can, all those things are copyrighted/trademarked images that cannot be reproduced without permission. Yet everyone does it, and it's a basically accepted practice. We took EOTF to the soft drink's advertising agency and tried to sell it to 'em. They said "we can't use it because George Lucas won't let his characters sell products, but feel free to use this anywhere and everywhere, it's great work, etc." Gave us blanket permission.

Which is what I said to Matt a while ago -- go ask Alanis' label for permission, I bet they'd grant it.

On a divergent note, just because someone isn't selling a product doesn't mean that there's no violation or that they don't have to worry about getting a letter from an attorney. If Matt's video had used Alanis' song, but the graphics and video footage had been of Nazi atrocities and slaughtering pigs and such, you can pretty much bet the lawyers'd be all over him. If you make a spec commercial that shows Kentucky Fried Chicken in a harsh light that makes the product look bad or harmful, they'll definitely shut you down just as soon as they hear about it. Has nothing to do with whether you're trying to make a buck off their product or not, it's about unauthorized use of their property.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Why does evryone keep mentioning  'Alanis'  here - matt's video was an "Evanescence" song or am I going crazy.

Barry your points are too obvious - I mean that is the case with anything. If I choose to film porn & use a product or someones piece of music over the top then off course were talking lawyers - anybody in their sane mind would know this unless they intend on unlawful practice.I say to anybody here - go out & showcase your creative talents by any means to get ahead in the buisness ie: shoot MV'S & Spots regardless of the copyright issues - you will not get anything on broadcast without going through the proper clearence procedures anyway so - the world really is your oyster - look what its done here in this thread alone for matt. If the work is good then someone will hire you for thier product or music & if not then it will just be ignored as they have better things to do with thier time than try & string you up  on any copyright issues.

Matt really doesn't need permisson unless he comissions the video for broadcast or any commercial gain - he should by all means contact the record label to pitch for another promo which is what I saw while working for record labels in the 90's - I saw tons of showreels with video covers & they were no different to what matt has done here ie a "Video cover"

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Hello you guys are overthinking it! I'm not talking copyright. hech, somebody owns the song "Happy Birthday" Go ahead and borrow all you want just don't put a sign in front of your work saying you need permission to use any of my stuff. When you yourself did not get permission!  8)

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Hey but the video is still his work & I would still protect the footage even though the song right's are not cleared ( for commercial gain). At the end of the day if somebody takes matt's work for his own & get's the music cleared somehow then matt has every right to put a permission notice on the site regarding his footage alone. The music is the up to the publisher of the artist to look after not matt - he just has to look after is footage - after all it is the footage that is orignally his - so if some music ch decides to cut & steal matts work & broadcast's it without his permission then there is a blatent copyright issue - nothing to do with the music. If that same music ch play's matts work as it is accompanying the song then the music ch will be at fault for broadcasting it without clearance from the aritst's publisher - not matt - he would simply be classed as a director of the video & would be within his right to sue anybody using his footage.

You must be crazy :) It was an Alanis Morrisette song from the "City of Angels" soundtrack.

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

Hey Kai turns out I am crazy - your right Alanis it is !!

I thought someone mentioned Evanescence along the way but anyway - there ya go :P

Re: WOW Look at this kids work!

He did two videos, one for Alanis' song "Uninvited" and the other for Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life." So you're both right.
